The remaking of cult fabulous movies

I just do not understand why anyone would do a remake of a cult classic movie? I just heard they are doing a remake of Dirty Dancing. There is nothing better than watching the original... and every remake is NEVER AS GOOD as the original anyway.

Some things just need to be left alone. I just hope they never do a remake of Pretty Woman. Nothing compares to the energy and spark of that movie and the actors in it. It is timeless like so many movies are that are 50 plus years old. Leave well enough alone and come up with a new idea.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'cult', but agree that they ought to knock it off w/ remakes. Movie studios seem to be desperate for ideas!

I nearly died when they recently remade Ben Hur - when it opened in theaters a few months ago, it BOMBED. Good!

What was delicious to read were the titles of the reviews:

"A Disaster of Biblical Proportion", "Chariots of Dire", etc. LOL!

I agree! Come up with some new ideas please! I have never seen a remake that I thought was better than the original.....They do it way too much too.....Dirty Dancing should be left well enough alone, it was perfect the 1st time!

I love the original movies, BUT I think they do remakes to introduce the movie to a new generation. Then perhaps the people that liked it would search out the original. The remake of You've Got Mail introduced me to the original. I preferred the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks version. The same with The Postman Always Rings Twice. I liked the remake with Jessica Lange much more.

Patrick Swayze was so good looking in Dirty Dancing. I recently watched part of a repeat of it because there was nothing else on.

I usually don't like remakes of movies or music, and I hate the lack of creativity in not being able to come up with something new.

A lot of the new generation likes the older things. I was surprised to learn that but it's true.

@mac116, remakes are a difficult thing to do ... sometimes they don't work and sometimes they do ... Usually, I don't like the remakes of movies, there are so many that just don't measure up to the original.

You mentioned, You've Got Mail, (which I really liked) was "tweeked" from the original play, 4 times so far, so the movie/play could be relevant to the audience at the time of distribution of the film / presentation of the play.

1937 original was a Hungarian play: Parfumerie

1940 adapted movie: The Shop Around The Corner

1949 movie: In The Good Old Summertime

1998 movie: You've Got Mail

1963 Broadway musical (being revived 2016): She Loves Me

The original play (1937) was before my time, so I didn't see that one. I understand the it was a very good in it's original language and lost some of it's richness when it had been translated and performed in 2009. Also, I haven't seen the Broadway musical, which is being revived (2016). However, I really liked all 3 of the movies.

I prefer the originals too.

I didn't have any desire to see the recent Ghost Busters movie with the female ghostbusters. I also prefer the original Steel Magnolias.

I agree with all of you. However, I especially think @mzlg had a good post when she suggested it might make people want to go back and see the original. I've heard of that happening surprisingly frequently.

Many...well..a good number..of young people are hungry for quality music, movies, plays, etc. A lot of them will search out the "older" stuff because they've heard how good it is and how it has withstood the test of time.

If a remake does anything (I agree, they often stink) it sometimes makes people search out the original....you know kind of like, "Why would they remake this"? Then they might search out the original.....

Rocky Horror is being remade showing on TV soon.....

I agree that the remakes are never as good as the originals but as the years and decades go by, the originals become to dated to enjoy. There are movies that i loved when I was younger and watched over and over again. But now when i try to revisit them, they aren't watchable.

OMG, I didn't realize they were going to do a remake of Dirty Dancing, it just won't be the same without Patrick Swayze, he was just so handsome & se*y! The remakes of good movies are usually no good, I heard the Ghost Buster with the females was a flop!

Take "cult" out of the equation. Hollywood will remake and reboot ANYTHING because of the lack of originality coming out of that area. To me it represents nothing more or less than a quick stop-gap meausre used to make a fast buck and I laugh when some of these pictures fall flat.

I don't like movie remakes. I always joke that Hollywood can't think of any new ideas when they start remaking too many things. I agree that a remake might make someone younger seek out the older version.

I can still enjoy an old classic movie. The age of the movie doesn't make it unwatchable for me. If it's a good movie it can stand the test of time; you just have to watch it as more of a movie set in a specific time. I can rewatch my faves over and over more easily than some of the current movies they make which seem to be more about special effects than story.
