MAJOR CRIMES 9/5 SHOOTING SHOCKER!

Who saw that courtroom shooting scene?

Boy, all I could think was what a way to adjust the cast in such a dramatic fashion!!

That was Part 1 of a 3 part story arc.

What did you think ?

I thought it was a great episode. It was riveting television.

I loved the part where Provenza told Rusty that he'd known Russel Taylor since his first day on the job and still had to get through the day, so Rusty needed to do the same, even though Doctor Joe was "dead."

I do hope that they make Fritz the new Chief. I'm sorry to lose Chief Taylor that way, but I love Jon Tenney and would be happy to see more of him.

I'm mad that it's going to take 2 more weeks to get to the end, but if the other episodes are as strong as that one, I'm okay with it.

I was nearly jumping out of my skin watching the episode last night. I love Major Crimes (and it's predecessor, The Closer) but last night the writing and acting--just superb all the way around. I know it's just a tv show but honestly, you don't see great writing and acting like that. One of the best shows on air. Also, I was surprised Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing-Dallas) directed the episode. Wonderful job.

One thing I must say ..... they did a great job picking up and going on when Kyra Sedgewick left! They changed the name from The Closer to Major Crimes ... and just kept going!

If someone had to die, I'm glad it was Taylor. He has been one of my least liked and unnecessary characters going back to The Closer. Like @ChynnaBlue, I'm not happy that the resolution of this is going to take three weeks but at least that's less time than last season's multi-part episode. It was nice for someone to finally remind Rusty that it's not always about him. I don't like the way they always give in to him, i.e. last week when Rusty wanted to watch Buzz interview the criminal that had something to do with his dad's death.

You have been watching the wrong shows. I see great writing and acting on lots of shows!

Major Crimes has an excellent cast and a team of writers who know how to use that cast well. I love that every character gets a chance to shine and that the show isn't about one character or one star, it's truly an ensemble show.

Major Crimes is outstanding on so many levels.

Definitely one of the best episodes in a long time. Loved it! I was hoping at end of last season that Rusty would make many less appearances. Guess it's not going to happen.

I thought this was the part 2. Last week introduced us to this storyline. Really, a very good show all the way, all the time!!!!

The Good Wife was one of the best shows on big network television. Madame Secretary is also excellent. Poldark and Sherlock on BBC/PBS are fantastic. Ripper Street (BBC America) is a wonderful period police procedural set in the time of Jack the Ripper. The canceled Copper was another great period drama, that one set in New York.

Fresh Off the Boat, Black-ish, and The Carmichael Show are all great comedies with ensemble casts. I really like The Carmichael Show because it brings up complex issues in a comedy and presents both sides. They've addressed Bill Cosby (can you still be a fan of his work knowing what we know now?), guns, politics, protests, gender, and prayer and more in ways that show that there's no one right answer. They've made me look at things in a new way, which is pretty impressive for a comedy show.

Lots of people (and the Emmy Awards) ignore science fiction shows, but they are often some of the best-written shows on television and often have an ensemble cast instead of one big star. Because they create the universe in which they operate, they can take on the complex issues of today in ways non-science fiction shows cannot. Some excellent sci-fi shows to check out include Orphan Black (BBC America), Battlestar Gallactica, Killjoys, Dark Matter, Fringe, Stargate, The Walking Dead, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Buffy episodes Hush and The Body are two of the best hours of television I've ever seen - and I've seen a LOT of television. In Hush, everyone in town has their voices stolen and they all have to communicate without speaking. Talk about a writing and acting challenge! In The Body, a major character dies unexpectedly and I've never seen a show handle the death of a loved one so well or so realistically. Everyone handles the grief differently and the episode is emotional and powerful. A show about vampires and demons handled death in a more human way than anything else out there.

Halt and Catch Fire is a majorly underrated show on AMC. And one of my favorite shows ever was canceled far too soon - Pushing Daisies. It was a victim of the writer's strike.

Oh, The Flash and Arrow have also had some great writing and acting. They're inconsistent, but some episodes have been fantastic.

@DukeBlueNan. Me too or at least spend some time away from the station. I am re-watching this episode. When that lady Jennifer came to see Buzz about his dad, there was Rusty looking in, listening...as if it's his right.

I love Major Crimes. Great show. However.....

I can't stand Rusty. Always roaming around the police station like he has no other place to live. Does he really need "babysitters" 24/7/365 days a year????

If anybody had to "leave" the show permenantly, it should have been him.

Wow! I didn't see that coming. Killing Chief Taylor off, that was a total shocker. When the shooting began, I thought the psychiatrist would be killed. I love the show but I do think it's time they sent Rusty off to college somewhere. They've done all they can do with his character, it''s getting a little tedius now..

Wow! I must be the only person who likes what they've done with the Rusty character! I like how we get to see the personal side of Sharon and how she handles a young man who never had the kindness of a decent family, and his interest in writing the stories. I think that they'll probably direct him to taking journalism in school.

I also like how they're handling the evolution of the Buzz character and his need to find out who killed his father and uncle. And what about Julio wanting to adopt a child?

This is one of the things I really enjoy about this show .... not only do they have the necessary "murder of the week", but each character is slowly being developed with various twists and turns in their lives.

Thanks so much for your comprehensive reply. i gave up on PBS because my PBS station is crappy & rarely shows the good programs you mention. All we get are "commercials" & old Antique Roadshows, etc.

I need to check out BBC America, I think I have that channel available.

I don't watch sitcoms, no matter how good they are. I watched the Good Wife the first couple of years, then it got too "soapy" for me.

I love The Walking Dead. There were a few old series that I love you didn't mention. Mad Men, Breaking Bad, House, NYPD Blue (it was ground-breaking at the time) and any Law & Order, but not SVU, too graphic for me.

I loved Downton Abbey

I watch few scripted shows. Of course we all know everything is somewhat scripted but I prefer something like Deadliest Catch over most scripted, 1 hour drama shows. I just glanced through the online guide on BBC America and it's Star Trek & old movies this week. I'll try again next week I also checked my PBS station, nothing interesting at all this week. No drama shows. All political or documentaries.

@Tinkrbl44 I don't see this as one either hates Rusty or likes everything about him. I do like the character development that we have witnessed since he first appeared; however, there is a mid-point. I also like seeing him navigate the conflict he is going thru trying to keep a relationship with his biological mom. On the other hand, Rusty has no business having access to cases and watching interviews. He is neither in law enforcement nor does he work as a civilian aid.

As far as Julio and Buzz, I am enjoying those stories and the unfolding of Sharon and Flynn's relationship as well as Amy and the undercover detective she's involved with. I would like to see more of Provenza and his wife. They haven't shown them as often since they married.

This show does not do multi-episodes well. I agree with @tedEbear; when they introduced Julio's foster son's missing mom and her backstory that should have been Part I. They could have wrapped it up in three weeks. After the "shooting shocker" it's pretty much anti-climatic from there so no need to s-t-r-e-t-c-h it out for another two weeks.
