2014 Tony nominations: Strange year for musicals

In a wildly unpredictable year for the Tony Awards, especially in the popular category of new musicals, “A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder,” “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” “After Midnight,” and “Aladdin” were deemed the four nominees for the award, with “If/Then,” “Rocky,” “The Bridges of Madison County” and “Bullets Over Broadway” all knocked out of a category that often is crucial to a show's future ticket sales.

Best new play nods went to “Casa Valentina” by Harvey Fierstein, “Act One” by James Lapine, “Outside Mullingar” by John Patrick Shanley, “Mothers and Sons” by Terrence McNally and “All The Way” by Robert Schenkkan.

In essence, every serious original musical of the season was snubbed, with the nominations going to two musical revues and two comedy pastiches. It's hard to recall another year in Broadway history when that was the case.

The composer Jason Robert Brown was nominated for his highly regarded score for “Bridges of Madison County” (and his orchestrations of that lush music). He's favored to win for best original score, but will compete against Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (“If/Then”), Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin (“Aladdin”), and Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman (“A Gentleman's Guide”).

Tuesday was an excellent morning for the picaresque but superbly crafted “Gentleman's Guide,” which scored 10 nominations, the most of any production of the 2013-14 season. “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” was not far behind with eight nominations, including one for its star, Neil Patrick Harris, and another for its director, Michael Mayer. In the category of best direction of a musical, Mayer will compete against Warren Carlyle (“After Midnight”), Leigh Silverman (“Violet”) and the heavily favored Darko Tresnjak (“Gentleman's Guide”).

The best direction of a play category included nominees Tim Carroll (“Twelfth Night”), Michael Grandage, “The Cripple of Inishmaan”), Kenny Leon (“A Raisin in the Sun”) and the favorite, John Tiffany (“The Glass Menagerie”). “After Midnight,” “Beautiful,” “Twelfth Night” and the widely admired revival of “The Glass Menagerie” also scored significant numbers of nominations across a variety of categories. The nominations for the 68th annual theater awards were announced early Tuesday by co-hosts Lucy Liu and Jonathan Groff at the Paramount Hotel in New York.

In her hometown of Evanston, there were cheers for Jessie Mueller, nominated (as anticipated) for her starring work in the role of Carole King in the musical, “Beautiful.” Mueller will compete against Kelli O'Hara (“The Bridges of Madison County”), Sutton Foster (“Violet”), Idina Menzel (“If/Then”) and Mary Bridget Davies (“A Night With Janet Joplin”). Steppenwolf ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro did not fare as well, with no nomination for her direction of “Of Mice and Men,” although the actor Chris O'Dowd, who played Lennie in that productions, scored a Tony nomination for best leading actor in a play, along with Samuel Barnett (“Twelfth Night”), Bryan Cranston, (“All The Way”), Mark Rylance, “Richard III” and Tony Shalhoub (“Act One”).

Other high-profile contenders without nominations include Denzel Washington, the star of “Raisin,” Michael C. Hall of Will Eno's “The Realistic Joneses” and Daniel Radcliffe, the reason “Inishmaan” made it to Broadway and the actor whose name is currently selling most of the tickets. The 2014 Tony Awards ceremony will be hosted by Hugh Jackman on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in New York, televised at 7 p.m. (CST) on CBS.
