How Did You Like The Last Mr Selfridge?

Well, that was a quick episode! I'm really going to miss this series!

I was surprised that Gordon was sitting at the bank's conference table when Harry walked in!

I didn't really think Mae loved Jimmy, she let him go because of his temper, but she really didn't seem to mind him leaving.

I was surprised Mae cared for Harry too. Maybe she was just a private person.

I was glad everyone ended up happy and some, like the young woman from the sewing room, and the new Mrs Grove.

I usually watch it Monday (don't mind the "spoilers", I'm ok with that.)

I loved this series. Thought the costumes were amazing. I loved seeing the 20's and 30's makeup. The actress who played Mae was absolutely a scene stealer. When she is on the screen, you can't look away. I enjoyed her acting immensely.

I'll miss it. It was a good "Well, no more Downton" but now we have to find something else to feed the Anglophilia.

A typical happy TV ending. Guy gets girl and they go Off together. Of course not at all the actual finish to the Harry Selfridge story which in truth was very sad indeed.

Plus, when the new management comes in they would make changes to Mrs. Grove being the big deal she would be sent home, the black gal probably would be let go, be a new deal come in.

Guess the ending was kool-aid for the starry eyed, but, real world is quite different.

Mae is gonna go where the money is and Selfridge was flat broke. LOL

Yes, typical happy ending ... everything neatly placed in the box and tied up with a bow. Jeremy Piven/Harry Selfridge never aged (bottle whatever he was using and sell that anti-aging product) - in reality Mr. Selfridge lost his store at the age of 83 (1941) and died 6 years later, at the age of 89 ... the true story is/was very sad. Even though there really wasn't a Lady Mae, she was a great addition to the series. I enjoyed seeing all the beautiful costumes and the sets. What will the KPBS/BBC surprise us with next?

I'd be happy with season 2 of 'Cromwell'. If your not a history buff you probably don't care, but, I am, and after Anne lost her head , Cromwell is next. Takes them so long to finish up a series.

Mae was always my favorite of this cast. I also liked Agnes and I really liked Rose's painter (I know that I am really going back aways here). Loved Miss Martle and Mr. Crabb. The one that I found who added nothing to the series, at last for me, was Rosalie. I just did not care for her.

The actual Mr. Selfridge died penniless living with one of his children. Story has it that after he was ousted from the store he would take the bus to the store almost every day and would stand in front of the store for hours gazing at the window displays.

A year or two ago, after the Mr. Selfridge segment played, PBS showed the entire true story of the real Mr. Selfridge. Yes, it did say that he lost everything and would be caught walking up and down the street of his old store after he was ousted. Having seen that, I wasn't sure how the last episode was going to play out.

The final episode was ok. Glad that they didn't show EVERYTHING that happened to him after he lost the store. I agree about the staff. That was a great scene to shoot, showing everyone line up to say their farewells. What an innovator he was with retail shopping! Before that behind the scenes about the actual Mr. Selfridge, I didn't realize how popular the Selfridge store has been.

The real Harry Selfridge died broke .... I'm ok with a little bit of happiness at the end ... this was entertainment, not a documentary.

I totally agree. I was somewhat dreading a really awful ending having a very rudimentary knowlege of Harry Selfridge (wikipedia). I think he hung around the Dolly sisters longer than the show demonstrated. But, yes, the show was a loose

interpretation of his life. I had mentioned in another forum that my son visited Selfridges in London last year. Apparently there is a coffeshop inside called

Dolly's--I assume in reference to the sisters.

What an interesting, complicated man. I loved Jeremy Piven in that role.

Several years ago some Canadian millionaire bought the store and has spent a lot of money revamping it and bringing in new and contemporary lines. It has regained its,popularity and once again reigns as "The Queen of Oxford Strret". Harry would be proud.

Yes, I have not been to London in decades, but my son travels a lot. He and his wife started watching the series as well. When he went to London last year, he made me a little iphone video (I'm not adept at reposting it here, sorry) from the exterior and then the enterior as he walked inside. It still looks beautiful the way a current beautiful city department store looks. You can even buy from Selfridges online.

It is located on Oxford Street. Of course the store everyone wants to visit in London is

Harrod's.
