Well, I was informed one year by an ex-DIL not to get any of that Bath and Body Works **#@! So, I guess not that.

If she has a special hobby like crafting or scrapbooking, a gift card to a supplies place would be appreciated.

Also, if she loves to read, a gift card to a bookstore or Amazon would work.

Jewelry if you know what she likes.

Probably best to ask your son. Much depends on your budget. Her fave perfume, or a gift set of same.

My MIL used to give me a small item then an envelope with cash or a gift card. I really appreciated that since our tastes are not alike.

I used to buy my DIL expensive items like a cashmere sweater or a designer handbag, but she never used the items and I might as well just have thrown hundreds a dollars away. So now...I buy her favorite chocolate and give her cash in a beautiful card. She is much happier and so am I. I don't have to rack my brain to buy her something she won't like or use.

We don't spend a lot on the adults-just for the kids, but I get my DIL Philosophy bath wash etc. I got several this year for 10.00 at Nordstroms. So that's what I give here. She likes it. No clothing, jewelry etc. That's for my son to buy.

Nordstrom has some nice cashmere shawls, but they are over $100. Not sure how much you want to spend. A small gift with a gift card is nice.

I bought my new DIL rose gold hoops from the Q. Around $60 last summer. I heard her say she would like to try rose gold. Done!

Some things I get my Granddaughters in that age group - Shower gel, body spry either from Bath & Body works or Victorias Secret, Candles, Infinity scarf, if you are in a cold climate - gloves with easy access to cell phone. If you buy from BBW or Victorias Secret and she doesn't like the fragrance they will exchange it.

Ask your son of there is a really nice restaurant she has wanted to try but is maybe too expensive for them and get her a gift card. Or if there is a theatre near you that has Broadway quality shows then a gift card for there would be great, if she would enjoy that? Maybe a gift card for a night at a fabulous hotel somewhere. I think everyone has enough candles, perfume, scarves etc. I like to get experiences, I think they make wonderful gifts.

I didn't get anything personal from my in laws. They always gave a gift to both of us...usually money. Sometimes a gift certificate to a restaurant we both l liked. Same with my parents. I always thought that was wise. Adding: If she goes to a salon for hair, mani/pedi, You could get a gc there to cover one of her visits. Or if she gets massages, the same thing. Just treating her to something that you know she likes to do....

In the 36 years before she passed, my MIL went thru different phases of gifting. She started out giving my husband and I a joint check, which went on for many years. Then she decided to make a change by buying a nice gift ($100 range) for one of us, and giving the other one a check for that amount. By this time she was into QVC, which is how I got a Maxx handbag and several pieces of Vicenza jewelry. She passed before gift cards became popular, but I feel sure she would have embraced the idea of gifting Cracker Barrel and Applebee's gift cards. I started gifting her with a large gift certificate that covered the full expense to get her hair done, for Christmas, and her birthday, which she absolutely loved. One of my favorite gifts now is a gift certificate to get a pedicure at my favorite shop, and sometimes the person pays for an OPI polish as well, and then I get to pick the color when I go for the pedi.

If you don't have any idea of a special gift she'd really like, I sort of like the idea of a small token gift and a gift card, either for somewhere you know she'd truly enjoy spending it or a prepaid more global card like Visa or MC... I don't favor cash... As impersonal as a gift card can sometimes seem, cash just doesn't seem right for this situation, somehow. If you're really close to someone, cash is fine, but otherwise it wouldn't be my choice to give...

I give both of our daughter in laws money and a few small gifts. Neither one of them like Philosophy shower gels. This year I bought one a food processor and the other one fleece sheets. I also put little gifts in their stockings.

Ask for a wish list from her. That's what I do. Trust me I would never on my own think to buy the things on her list. Lol makes life easier.
