Caution: Drugs as candy bars

We received a letter from the school superidndent who reported that a student. age 16 brought a chocolate bar laced with marijuana to school and shared it with 2 other students. School administrators need to be hyper focused to keep our schools safe. Many of us are old enough to remember when marijuana cigarettes were laced with PCP. Be very cautious and please tell children not to ingest ANYTHING that is not regulated by the Food and Drug Association. It is simply too dangerous in this world we live in. No one knows where these pills and chocolates are being manufactured or what the nefarious drug dealers are doing behind closed doors.

@Reever Yikes. Any details on how and why this particular exchange got the super's notice. Hope it was those 3 students outed themselves by interrupting a class or talking too loud about it in the halls or on the playground.

It's been a couple of decades since I retired from the classroom, but even that long ago, I might well not have noticed a quiet exchange of food.

Nothing new, back in the sixties the gatherings were on the edge of school property.

They're called edibles. Sold in smoke shops. A lot of things are not regulated by the FDA like supplements.

@Reever @I think the way you speak to kids and the actual words you use are very important when you warn kids about things. Many kids will readily accept treats from friends they know from school. This happens in the lunchrooms and throughout the buildings as well as in situations when kids visit each other.

The warning should be that, even though we all eat foods and treats at home or when we're. visiting adult relatives, sometimes foods, including cookies and candy can have chemicals added to the recipe. Some of the chemicals can cause mild side effects and some can cause severe side effects and have even killed some people. This can happen with or without the knowledge of the friend that's trying to share with you. Since there have been so many instances of people, young and old, becoming very ill in the last few years, it is much safer just to not accept anything to eat from others. Just remind them that it's better to be safe than sorry.

As children head back to school parents and grandparents need to be stern and provide warnings that these drugs are infiltrating our schools. It is terrifying watching the news, the drug dealers are lacing these things with fentanyl and PCP. Marijuana is dangerous to begin with but if laced with a foreign chemical it could be deadly. I am so sad watching news reports of young people overdosing. The schools also need to be proactive and provide classroom instruction regarding the danger of drug use.
