iRobot Floor/Rug Cleaner

Has anyone purchased this in the past? If so, could you please share your experience with the item? I am thinking of buying this.

@World Traveler, I have had one for the past 5 years and absolutely love it. I have both hardwood floors and carpet. There have been times where I use it right after I vacuum and am always amazed at how much “stuff” Roomba picks up. When it is finished running (typically 2 hours) or the container is filled, all you have to do is empty it and clean the brushes-in total it takes less than 5 minutes. DS asked for this for Christmas and I just ordered one for him.

@LIndaMJ Thank you so much. Your experience is confirming what I was seeing on the demonstration. It is always nice, though, to hear what others on the forum have experienced.

If there is a downside, what would that be?

From what I witnessed on TV, it appears it would only hold a small amount of dirt or debris, compared to my upright vacuum. Do you find you have to empty it more than you would normally have to with other cleaners?

And if you have animals, how is it doing with animal hair? I have two dogs, one of which has long hair. I think I would be emptying that container more than normal because of what appears to be its small size. Perhaps I would just have to run it more often rather than once a week.

We've had a Roomba for several years. We LOVE it! We run it every night when we're ready for bed. We have it "set" to do the living room, dining area, hall (all carpeted) and kitchen (laminate). We have a Golden Retriever who sheds a LOT. The Roomba does a wonderful job picking up everything in its path. I don't vacuum (bad back) but hubby only has to vacuum every week or two, as long as we're using the Roomba! If/when it dies, we'll get another immediately.

@World Traveler, the downside for you is you would have to clean the dog hair out of the roller brushes when you empty the canister. Since I no longer have animals, I infrequently have to clean my rollers. Although the canister is smaller than the one on my regular vacuum, the dirt & dust is compacted and therefore can hold more than you would think. You would definitely have to run the Roomba more than once per week. Another thing-if the canister fills up and can no longer hold anymore, it will shut itself off and tell you to empty it; which only takes a few minutes even with cleaning the rollers.

My sister raved about the irobot, but she really hates sweeping, so I was skeptical about how well they work. I bought one when they were on sale at Costco a while back and I love it! The only problem I have is that I have a rug on a pad over hardwood floors and sometimes when "she" gets off the rug, she can't get back on it. But it you have hard surface floors with lower height rugs, she does great. I have the battery operated boxes that act like an invisible fence to keep her within certain areas. It's amazing how much she picks up. I don't have animals, but if I don't do it regularly, sometimes I have to empty the bin, but it is very easy to do. If it broke, I would probably buy another one.

ETA: I just looked at what is being offered, and the price is good. I think I paid $350 and didn't get all the extras, except two of the boxes to keep it contained.

I, too, am interested in acquiring a Roomba. DH and I have reached that stage of life where we need new, easier ways of doing old things.

My concern about this particular model, the 690, is that the top of the line is in the 900s now. I am not at all sure what the differences between models are. No one here has mentioned which models they have, and I think that may be pertinent information.

When I had a Roomba, I had several collies and a lot of pet hair. The Roomba would stop and not operate when it got more than a tiny bit of hair in the brushes. I was spending so much time cleaning brushes that I could have whipped out the Dyson and done the cleaning quicker. It just wasn't worth the hassle for me.

I got the last iRobot TSV and it does an excellent job in my home on tile and hardwoods. My area rugs are rather thick and it does not do a great job on them. I l ike it but if I had known that I generally have to get out my Dyson, then I probably would have not purchased it.

I have had my original Roomba for over 8 years plus I purchased the last TSV so now I have one on both floors of my house. I love Roombas and would never ever be without one. I have long hair and we do have a large Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a cat so I do need to clean the brushes after each use in addition to emptying the dirt cup but that is just general maintenance and takes only a few minutes. It is amazing what they pick up and the ease of having them go under the furniture and into the closets is wonderful. They handle all floor surfaces well and go from one to the other without my having to adjust anything. We have hardwood, carpet, and ceramic tile. I just wish they would invent one that does the stairs! I am ordering this one as a Christmas gift/housewarming present for our niece.

@IamMrsG, my model is a 650. It came with 3 filters (still haven't replaced them because occasionally I rinse them off & let them air dry & reuse) one barrier, same amount of batteries as the TSV and the cleaning tool. To the best of my memory I paid $299.99 in BB&Beyond with the 20% coupon approximately 5 years ago. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the great feedback.

I went ahead and ordered one. With the free shipping and extension until the end of January to return, my dogs and I plan to give it a real test!

My house has linoleum in the kitchen, breakfast room, and utility room; tile in the entry way; and a somewhat thick rug in the rest of the house. I say "somewhat thick" because after many years of living here, the only areas that are really nice and plush are in the corners where no one walks!

The drop-down family room may give pause to the iRobot, but the rest of the house will be fine for it to go thru.

It will be interesting to watch how the youngest dog reacts the first time, and then ensure that the door is closed to the area of the house I am having the iRobot clean, otherwise she would probably try to play with it! The other dog gets intimidated easily and will just go out the doggy door and hide until I say it is okay to come back in.

Now the big decision is what to name it! ha!

@World Traveler Did you see (recently) where James Cordan (Late Late Show) had a video of a cat riding on a Roomba? It was soooo funny that they replayed it on the CBS morning news last week. It's probably on You Tube too.

@World Traveler I just placed my order, too. We have a rec room in the finished basement, so I was tempted to order two. Instead, I went to Amazon and ordered a second dock charger for $42.

Edited to add: I think I'll name her Rosie, after the Jetsons' robot maid.

I want one that will wash my floors. At 65, I run out of energy with the dusting, polishing, laundry, cooking, and maybe one errand per day. I'm OCD keeping my kitchen and bathrooms clean, and that always goes well and makes me feel good.

Help with the floors, and I think I will be good. Off to place my order!
