Hi

We have been discussing this watch in the Watch Collectors thread. All the small sizes are gone. The other is a massive 47mm. Pretty big. If you find it masculine, then it isn't for you, but it generally sells as a "men's" timepiece. Some women wear the big one for a showstopper, attention-grabber. They first sold the 38mm version in 2005/2006 and before that. and itw as sold as a women's piece. However, I also know men that wear the smaller.
""

Most watches are measured in millimeters. That's the industry standard. For a large watch, most women should stick to 40mm and below.

26mm is 1 inch

40mm will translated into a 1.5 inch case.

47mm is literally 1.85039 inch. That means it's over 1 3/4 inches. There are women who have larger wrist sizes of 7 inches and above (as do many men) and if they wanted to, they could wear it. That's a lot of stainless steel.

If your wrist is 6 inches or so.

In most cases, I don't recommend anything larger than 43-44mm. Obviously, the watches then are worn above the wrist bone.

I have done it, but I am different when it comes to wearing watches. I wear both men's and women's watches and have done so for years. If I really loved a watch, I wore it. I have worn 47mm, but that is really big on me. I lost weight and have smaller arms and wrists. It is really big and I wouldn't attempt it with anything but an Invicta , because they know how to create a large watch so that it is comfortable. Someone with a 5 inch wrist, to 5.5 inch wrist I just don't see wearing it, they can only remove so many links. I think it can be done with a 5.5-5.75 inch wrist. Depends on the shape of the wrist, etc.

If you see Kendy try watches please keep in mind that she is nearly 5'11, has long arms and hands and has a trick of making the watch look like it "fits." Her favorite stance is to bend her hand down so it looks like it fits her.

This is from someone who really did wear the big watches. You can try them, I just honestly don't like to see people waste time and money. At this point, I am being very selective about the type of watches I buy.

.

Most women do that and many won't wear a 47mm even if they could.

I agree with Java, 47mm is pretty large for most women. My wrist is between 7.0 - 7.25" and I usually don't like to wear a watch larger than 42mm. I have a few watches that are 45 - 47mm and I find I just don't wear them very often because they are so heavy and a bit unwieldy. I also have found that the thickness of the case is as important as the case diameter in terms of comfort. I don't usually like to wear a watch with a case thicker than 15mm. I will go slightly thicker if the case design is such that it slopes down on the edges so it doesn't "feel" as thick.

The abalone Subaqua Noma I has a wider, thicker bracelet than most 38mm watches, which makes it heavier than most watches that size. That's one reason why I am glad I didn't get the 47mm--it would have been heavier than I want to wear on a regular basis.

Tinkrbl: it's hard to visualize watch sizes unless you are very familiar with them. Even a few mm (millimeter) or a quarter of an inch difference in diameter can result in a much larger or smaller watch.... it's all geometry, for the area increase is much greater than the increase in the diameter. Also typically watch size quotes do not include the measurement of the stems (crowns and chronograph pushers). So a watch quoted at 38mm is a few mm bigger if you add in the stem.

But for reference:

1/4 inch = approx. 6 mm

1 inch = 25 mm

1 1/2 inch = 37.5 mm

2 inches = 50 mm

So a watch with a 38mm case size has a diameter of about 1 1/2 inches. That is much larger than a watch which is 25mm or 1 inch. I think a quarter is about 1 inch.

Some of the sites have a size comparison so you can see circles of different mm size and actually print them out and 'try them on' your wrist.

These days most womens traditional watches are 30-34mm. In the old days womens watches were 16-24mm. But lots of womens watches today are up to 42mm, sometimes they are called boyfriend style watches.

It's easy to get used to wearing a larger watch once it's sized. For a little while you are aware of it and then all of a sudden you forget you have it on and the size seems perfect. Then all your old smaller watches don't seem right any more.

If you get a larger watch one way to get a feel for it before having it sized is to put it on and then take a rubber band and pinch together all the extra links so the watch 'fits'. It makes a big difference compared to trying to visualize what the watch will look and feel like when it's sized. Most companies will not allow you to return a watch that has been sized.

As others have mentioned, it's not only the case size that determines the comfort of the watch.... it's also how the watch is made, the way the bracelet or strap is attached, and also the thickness and weight of the watch. This particular watch, the Invicta Abalone SubAquaNoma 1 is a very heavy watch. It has a wide and thick solid bracelet.
