I use the magnet pin, and it works well, but wouldn't use it on flimsy fabrics.

Loose weaves, like most sweaters shouldn't be damaged by pins. Tight weaves, like silks could be a problem. In any event, pin the pin thru your bra strap to give it extra support so that the pin will lay properly and not tug on the fabric.

I'm just careful to poke the pin through a little space between the yarns. I've never pulled a thread or had it leave a mark. I do wear cotton sweaters though. I don't know if it would be different on cashmere or other types.

I always use an earring stopper with pins and brooches before latching the pin closed -- this way, if the latch opens, the pin does not fall off. Insert the pin through the fabric and then slip on the clear earring stopper. Push the earring stopper up the pin and then latch the pin closed. The earring stopper prevents the pin from slipping out of the fabric and falling off -- this works really well unless the fabric is very loose weave.

Merrylass, that's a great idea that I wish I had known before. I'm a big fan of pins and brooches, and had one of my nicest ones fall off, unnoticed, in my office. To make matters worse, I rolled my chair over it, bent it and lost two of the tiny sapphires in it. My jeweler saved the day with repairs, but it would have been better never to have damaged it--less expensive, too.

Glad to contribute a helpful hint. I love brooches and I hate the thought of losing any so this was my solution. For larger pins, I remove the eraser off a pencil and use it as a makeshift stopper if I cannot use the earring stopper. It's easy enough to cut the eraser smaller if it is too big.

Vegas, I'm sorry to read about your brooch. It's great that you were able to get it repaired but you must have felt sick when you damaged it!
