On 5/22/2014 ennui1 said:
On 5/22/2014 mskringle said:
It is solid gold, as others have said, but it's not a lot of gold. It is just enough to be solid. I think they measure plated items in units of microns, while the gold on Barbara's pieces could be measured in fractions of millimeters. Think of barely visible microns to very visible millimeters in thickness as one difference. Either way, it's a thin layer, but the difference is in how thin. In the pic of the ring below - J292721, you can see that the gold is visibly affixed to the silver and it is a solid, albeit thin layer.

I have lots of her pieces and I like the gold accents, but I realize there isn't much of it. I've been collecting about 10 years.

So I suppose the debate centers on the definition of "solid gold." Cue the dancers.

Honestly, this whole fan club idol worship mentality when it comes to jewelry designers completely puzzles me. No one is allowed to pull the curtain back from the Wizard of Oz without being tarred and feathered. The beloved designer walks on water and that's all there is to it. I've seen it with Ripka, Pollack, and now Bixby. It's WEIRD.

I think you misinterpreted my intent. I believe the previous issue had been whether or not it was a "thin" layer and objections were raised about the meaning of "thin". I suppose we could also debate the meaning of "solid" if you want to raise that issue too. If you consider that the gold is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons, then most of it is empty space and doesn't qualify as solid.

My point was that the gold is indeed "thin", and each person needs to determine whether or not that is acceptable. It is durable enough that the OP need not worry that it will wear off, which was her concern.

Please do not lump me with those whom you perceive as intending to 'tar and feather' you. Maybe you're having a bad night, but I have never been one to be critical of your posts, which you well know. And while there is some degree of 'heroine/hero" worship on these boards, being a long time collector as I have been means that I know the product. It does not mean that I mindlessly support everything that the designer does or that I can't critically evaluate the products or the designer.

Hey ~ The 18kt gold on BB's jewelry...Is that plated on sterling, or is it actual gold. I don't like the plated stuff because it eventually rubs off. I have my eye on a few pieces. TIA

Shame on me.

I have had jewelry resized and the flowers - and the other gold pieces - are sold. The flower had to be removed off a ring recently and the expert jeweler saw it is real gold and has to carefully put it back on. Some piece have more gold then others but they aren't QVC gold plated, etc.

You can see the seam between the gold layer and the silver base.

If you zoom in on J292721, you can see the gold leaf is on a silver base. Look at the seam. Look at the under gallery -- silver.

It's not rocket science.
