QVC is awful, I buy ver ylittle jewelry from them because they really don't give out any information about the pieces. Rarely do they provide gram weights and they never tell if the stones are treated, they never discuss care of the stone. Sorry, but "this is so red carpet" and "I love love love" doesn't substitute for some basic information about the piece. Ripka's turquoise might be natural but is it "reconstitued" turquoise? Has it been dyed?

In this case I was just hoping for natural stuff because the design is very pretty for my taste. I refuse to buy reconstitute de or infused stuff. And I like only no matrix stones, SB or Persian, no matter how valuable other SW stones are. Even if it cost a million per carat it will not make me love it. Like I said it is a cultural thing.

Here we go again! There are a number of threads about stabilized, compressed, and lastly "reconstituted" turquoise. That's where these boards are really helpful in educating unsuspecting customers. The "other" shopping channel with a community board has an interesting thread about compressed turquoise. Buyers beware! Read the fine print. The shopping channels are required to list details of the gemstones, however these details are not necessarily discussed on air! Could hurt sales.

I only buy Carolyn Pollack's stuff as far as sleeping beauty goes. I can't imagine she can call it Sleeping Beauty and not offer the real deal. I could be wrong. I totally expect to get Chinese reconstituted powder turquoise from Ripka given where her jewelry is manufactured.

I found the turquoise description on her high end website. I was surprised. I have a couple pieces of it, carefully chosen because I love the look of the TOTAL piece. I prefer turquoise in a natural state with matrix...however, following this board since 2007, I have found that people don't want the matrix or they want it to be exactly matching....this is less possible with natural mined turquoise....very hard for earrings in particular, as both need to be very similar if not exactly the same. Most of us veterans if ordering turquoise or lapis earrings, order two pair to increase the odds of getting a better match. Thus returning the others.

So Ripka is damned if she does or damned if she doesn't...I choose those pieces where the "look and aesthetic" I love and do not order those I don't. I have decided not to care about how the turquoise and/or lapis is formed...I judge the end result. I hope you all are doing the same.

David Yurman uses this "stuff" too...so do a lot of other "high end" manufacturers...copied from his website:

Why does David Yurman use simulated turquoise?

Due to increased demand for turquoise, mines worldwide have become depleted and there is very little natural turquoise left. Because the Sleeping Beauty turquoise that David Yurman favors is particularly scarce, we have opted to use simulated turquoise in some of our jewelry collections. This material comprises natural stones that are ground into a paste, bound with resin, and dyed to achieve a beautiful blue hue.

How is hematine different from hematite?

Hematite is the technical word for iron oxide rocks that occur in nature. While very beautiful, Hematite is also quite brittle and doesn’t polish well. To achieve consistency and beauty in his designs, David Yurman chooses to use Hematine, a man-made stone also composed of iron oxide. Hematine is easier to manipulate and has a brilliant sheen. The two stones are virtually indistinguishable from each other and are close in value.
