Be careful with your bracelets while wearing coats

I noticed an artisan S hook bracelet as it slid off my wrist yesterday while taking off my coat in a restaurant. In the past I have lost two gold box and tongue bracelets while wearing coats in the winter. So now I'm going back to my old rule of nothing but snug bangles in the winter that can't possibly loosen and come off.

I've lost a couple of bracelets myself and didn't notice right away. By the time I realized they were gone, it was too late to go back and try to find them. Fortunately, they were not terribly expensive.

trying on clothes is another good way to lose jewelry - bracelets and especially earrings - have even lost watches that way - so sad when that happens

Thank you for the alert, depglass. I have a bad track record with scarves worn on top of the coat and earrings. Seems they snag on the scarf, I remove the scarf (or sometimes don't even remove it) and lose a gold earring. Much of my jewelry has sentimental value, and it breaks my heart when I lose a piece this way.

I am sorry you lost your bracelet but very much appreciate your reminder of caution.

Definitely a good reminder. I like the unusual clasps, toggles and hooks for the fashion, but a person really has to be aware of their jewelry. Sometimes it is easy to miss when something feels so comfortable you forget you are wearing it. I have an 18k greek key link bracelet my godfather gave me as a teen. I used to wear it all the time but it had a box clasp and was always coming undone. I almost lost it many times, then finally took it to a jeweler and had them put a safety chain on it. Winter is the worst with coats and sweaters that tug on them, much easier in summer with short sleeves and you are more aware of your jewelry. We pay a price to look good.

I lost a 5 carat diamond bracelet that always got hung

up on sweaters and coats.... I was really bummed about

it because I know it cost my husband a mint....

It was also a gift for when I gave birth to our first child.

We have a garden gate in our back yard and in the

Spring of that year my husband looked down and there

was the bracelet almost covered in dirt...

I have never worn that bracelet again....

Yesterday we were out at lunch.. I straightened my

scarf so I would not get any food on it and found my

18K gold earring hooked on it...

Each time I see that earring I think of Jeff... Thanks

Kzeks - You sound like me with my diamond tennis bracelet. We traveled to Ohio on New Year's Eve to attend DH's grandmother's funeral. Being from the South I had to dig out my heavy coat for the funeral. After the service and lunch, I went to the bathroom and discovered that my tennis bracelet was gone. DH had just bought this bracelet for me at Christmas. After searching all over the building we were in I found that gorgeous bracelet. Consequently, I NEVER wear that bracelet with any kind kind of sleeve that falls to my wrists. It is usually put away in the winter months and I bring it out in the spring time. Thanks depglass for the caution and reminder.

Yes, my bracelet has a 3 way lock... One on top and

2 on the sides that hook on the top lock... You would

think that with all that security it would not come un-locked.

I always avoid to wear bracelet, as it is very risky to carry them, bangles are the best choice to avoid loosen in winters.

I've lost two weighty gold bracelets back in the 90's because of coats. I have learned my lesson and I never, ever wear bracelets in the winter unless I have a special occasion to go to. It's a shame because I have so many pretty bracelets but they "take a break" during the winter months! Whenever I think of my lost gold bracelets, I get sick to my stomach. I'm sure whoever found them were real happy!

Thanks for the reminders everyone. Here's another--don't wear earrings when trying on clothing because they can pop off when slipping things over your head and off. I lost an earring at Macy's by taking it off to try on an earring and forgetting to put my own earring back on. I felt terrible about it.

Not as bad as losing bracelets is the experience of getting Byzantine jewelry repaired as it can get snagged on collars,wrists of dresses &coats, as well as hemlines (had an ankle bracelet repaired many times on this account).

I lost a dangling diamond that was secured by a lever back. The part where it closes wasn't very hard to open and close. I lost it when I was removing a scarf.

I had a pair of small 14k gold earrings...everyday...but beautiful...forgot they were on and went to take a shower...and one dropped off and down the drain of the tub...couldn't save it...

I love to have a variety of bracelets. But I don't like the box closure or tongue in box (whatever you call it) with the figure 8 snap bar closure. That figure 8 thing always loosens up for me and flaps open, and the box closure is never that secure in the first place. I won't buy any bracelets like that. Give me a big C ring clasp and I am happy.
