Today's show with Antonella, and last night's show with Jennifer, have had some really pretty amethysts. Deep purple.

When the deep purple falls

Which is better, African or Brazilian? I remember those shows with Kathy Levine, when the Brazilian amethysts would fly out the door and the shows would end early.

Hi, Ennui, I think African amethyst is considered the finest for color due to the red/pink undertones versus the blue undertones in the Brazilian amethyst. Sammycat would know for sure. Both are beautiful in my opinion. And Michael Valitutti is having a big amy TTV I think on Feb 6th. It is an oval checkerboard cut 16 carat Tanzanian color change amethyst, or Uruguayan color change amy. I forget which. I'll bet the stone on that ring is incredible.

It is Tanzanian amy and the number is one three seven-six eight nine. While I am not a big fan of his settings, I sure do love his gemstones.

ETA: African is best when it comes to amy. Check out the picture of that amethyst. Wowsers!

ETA: Tanzanian African Amethyst is pretty spectacular, too.

You can find the same amethyst photo on the GIA website. African ame is also full of inclusions, but who's going to care with that color!

Love the lyrics to that oldie but goodie song.

African is a deeper shade than most Brazilian, and Uruguayan some of the deepest of all amethysts. Sometimes though in the bigger stones, deep, intense color can lack clarity.

There are retail and wholesale values on stones, but as an old GIA instructor of mine said, "Stones have certain benchmarks through which we determine quality and value. Ultimately, though, a stone [on the open market] is worth what someone is willing to pay for it."

Agree on your assessment of the show -- I caught only part of it, but there were some beautiful pieces and reasonable prices, too.

The finest Amy is Russian Imperial Amethyst. But it is not available anymore for the mass market. Then goes Bolivian and Uruguayan material ,color shift with blue tones. And African is also great, but it has red flashes in it. Brazilian is nice, but its color is unstable, have to be careful with sun light. But Brazilian is the only one they use to produce Prazeolite. Michael is already posted his set, nice, but too big for me, I will pass.

Better than Smoke on the Water?

I have a vintage amethyst ring -- the stone varies from fuchsia to smoky blue. I've never seen another stone like it.

Any amethyst can fade. No matter where it comes from, it is still quartz.

Yeah, Amethists are delicate that way, but Brazilian are the weakest. As for songs, to me nobody beats Deep Purple. They were in our area 3 years ago. It was great ! I bought a poster. Love Ian G. He sang Smoke on the water.

I prefer the richer deeper shade of African amethyst. I also think that Uruguayan amethyst is gorgeous too. Both types have the magenta coming out of it. I do like Brazilian but it seems to me that it's much lighter (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I do LOVE the pink amethyst that comes out of Brazil. It looks SO much like kunzite.

Until I read these posts and the links (thanks, ladies!!) I didn't know there ws a difference. Beloved Spouse gave me a HUGE (maybe 30 carat) amethyst pendant as a gift a few years ago that blew away any other pieces I had. It is an emerald cut and is the deepest, clearest, most striking stone I have ever seen. After reading all this information I now understand what a great gift it was!

What is the color shift? Purple and ... ?

Guessing from the current price, it will be over $300?

Hi, Ennui. As the last garnet TTV ring was discounted by ~30%, I think that this new amy ring might go for ~$299. Of course, I could be completely wrong on that. We will have to wait and see unless anyone else here has seen or heard about the price.

ETA: I think the color shift will be purple and blue, but I could be wrong about that, too! LOL.

I'll be surprised if it goes that low; maybe $329, that's my guess.

But I will be sure to surround myself with amethysts I already own before I tune in.

It's amethyst day over on the Liquidation Channel. Some pretty items, some not-so-pretty. Be careful of the platinum-plated brass and stainless steel chains.

And, remember, radiant orchid is the color of the year.

I think it was maybe 5 or 6 years ago, The Q offered a pear shaped ring in amethyst and also in citrine, small diamonds around each large stone. I don't remember if it was African or Brazilian, I think Brazialian. Anyway, every time I think about that ring I get so annoyed I didn't order it. It was really pretty. As I remember it the reviews were fairly good with the exception that the ring was somewhat top heavy, so it need to fit very snug so it would not slide on the finger. I can still see that ring on Leah's long fingers... City

I remember that ... there were matching pendants, too. The diamonds stuck out, very pokey.
