So Lisa said something was too big.......just her thought about the length of the necklace. Why over analyze her words?
If you will read the original post the words ""too big"" was repeated 4 times. That was the original reason why I commented as I did. So it was not over analyzed but a fact.

Lisa must have repeated ""too big"" 20 times!! That's why I noticed it!

Hyacinth

I was puzzled by something Lisa said on the first gold show.

She was showing Byzantine necklaces, very pretty. They came in 16, 18, and 20 inches. She put on a 20 inch necklace, and then kept fussing saying it was too big for her. She kept saying there were sizes too large for the models.

I could not wear a 16 inch because it would be too small. But too big?

Isn't it sometimes a preference as to where you like the necklace rather than a necklace being "too big?"

She had a very low cut dress on (very pretty). So, I would think any size, depending on where you like it, would be appropriate.

I just didn't get all this fussing over 20 inches being "too big."

Hyacinth

It did look too long on her, the 18" looked so much better. The 16" would have looked to 'tight' because of her strapless dress. 18" perfect fit for her.

Because I wouldn't be wearing strapless dress (if I bought one) I would have gone with the 20" as it would have looked better with a high collar winter type shirt.

ETA: Had it not been a 'graduated' style, a 20" would have looked good, too, probably.

Just my opinion....

It's matter of personal preference, body build and the outfit you are wearing. I can't wear 20" necklaces and I'm a lot larger than Lisa and the models. If I want to wear a pendant that sits in the hollow of my neck, I have to use a 16" chain.

I think the problem is that a herringbone is meant to wear flat against the surface, whether it be your skin or a sweater. Unlike ropes or other chains which are more forgiving if the length is a bit longer, I'm not comfortable with a necklace like a herringbone or even an omega that doesn't frame my neck. It is a matter of preference and I do get Lisa's point.

Maria

Maybe it won't lie right on her collarbones if it's too long. It might twist or maybe not lie evenly but hang forward because her neck isn't wide enough to take up enough of the length.

Actually, they should use the word 'long' rather than 'big' because then people wouldn't get wrongly caught up in all the body size issue stuff.

Sometimes just because there's neckline space available, the length still matters and some pieces just look/feel better at a particular length. I doubt there's any rule of thumb, but I know I've tried various necklaces with different outfits to find what I think "fits."

I know a 24" necklace fits around my necklace, but there are none in my entire collection - not in gold, costume, or even pearls. I just find that length wrong for me no matter what I'm wearing.

When I think of "too large," it seems to imply the piece is too wide/chunky. Perhaps, she should have said "too long"? If the dress is low cut, I would think any length could have worked. I guess it's personal preference.
