topic People selling their sterling flatware, hollowware, and coins for scrap in Jewelry

The whole thing just makes me sad. I go to a lot of auctions and there is an absolute frenzy to sell off beautiful sterling flatware sets and silver coins for melt value. Yes, I know heirs have to dispose of these items. And people with coin collections have to cash in sometime. I went to an auction Saturday that had beautiful repousse pieces. The guy next to me was a jeweler that was going to sell to a melter for scrap. I wanted to club him, but I just smiled sweetly. These pieces have value as antiques and certain coins will always be collectible. I just hope some can be preserved intact for future antique and coin collectors.
