Silver Jewelry Cleaner Recommendation

Yesterday, my sister asked me to order her a silver jewelry cleaner from Amazon. Back in the day, when silver was reasonable, she bought a lot of pieces. She said it's mostly for bracelets and earrings, not for pieces with stones. etc. When I looked, there were so many different types of cleaners, I was at a loss. Do you need to use a polish or something AFTER the cleaner, as well? Any recommendations from any silver jewelry owners here would be welcomed?

Line a glass dish with tin foil, add baking soda and hot water and you will see the tarnish melt away

I rely on Sunshine Cloths. After polishing with the cloth I sometimes wash the silver piece in gentle soap and water, dry, then do a final buff with a soft cloth.

For heavy tarnish I use Maas silver polish. But Sunshine Cloths are usually all that's needed.

Agreed, polishing cloths and placing items in a tin foil lined bowl with baking soda are great for silver upkeep and cleaning!! Sometimes I will try toothpaste and a soft brush and then rinse items off and dry with a polishing cloth. I have loads of silver...but can't wear all of it at one time, lol!!!

I use the Connoissuer line--got a kit for silver, gold, pearls and soft gems and something else too-- came with cleaning cloths too--think its from AMZ--they are in a red container. Have bought them at Target too.

Just be very careful with the liquid type silver cleaners, some contain toxins and come with warnings on them. Read the labels carefully.

Keep away from the jars with baskets and liquid. Nasty stuff.

Be careful of pieces with oxidation too. Want to preserve that.

Maybe a tub of the paste and a cloth for a quick rub?

I have a ton of silver I keep in anti tarnish boxes. I rarely have a piece that's really badly tarnished, so usually all I need for polish is a Sunshine Cloth, which is the best polishing cloth available.

Keep in mind that many cleaning methods will remove decorative oxidation, which shows off detail, as well as unwanted tarnish. You won't like the look of your cleaned jewelry without its oxidation.

I like to use silver foam on pieces with highly polished silver. I have to use the silver dip (I use Connoisseur's) on byzantines and ropes and pieces where I can't polished every corner, but since it is abrasive try to use it just the one time and then immediately place in an anti-tarnish pouch/box.

Always rinse well. You should wipe off with a microfiber cloth.

You will have to remember that some of the jewelry is rhodium plated. This method will strip away any rhodidum plating to begin with..

I use Wright's Silver Cream on all my sterling jewelry. It is recommended for sterling silver, silver plate, antique silver, flatware, pewter, chrome, fiberglass and porcelain. I've used it on sterling gemstone jewelry with no problems. It works on oxidized sterling silver, removes the tarnish but not the oxidized finish (like Jai jewelry).

The product is in a white plastic jar with a blue lid and blue label. It is a pink paste and comes with a sponge. Just wet the silver piece, use a bit of the pink paste on the sponge, rub it on the piece until it foams, rinse off, tarnish is gone. Very easy and quick, no nasty silver dip liquid. I purchased it at my local hardware store and grocery store.

I'm going to look for Wright's. I haven't seen it locally. I haven't been wearing my silver recently because I can't polish it up.

I bought connisour (sp?) the last 3 times and none of it has worked. The 2 polishing cloths have been totally dry...flannel without the built in cream on one sheet. I suspect they had a huge inventory and they keep sending out old polishing cloths to stores (both Wm t and Tg t). I threw them both out. Then I got the red jar and it didn't seem to do anything. I did not leave the silver in long.

I forgot some pretty earrings years ago in the red jar Connis.liquit cleaner with the basket and it corroded and pitted them terribly. Ladies, please don't let your silver soak in this stuff.
