SELLING JEWELRY

I've been selling my good jewelry (except sentimental inherited pieces) for years. Gold prices have been up.

Another bag went to the buyers last week. Where we're moving will have no alarm system on our doors or a built in safe in the apartment like we have now. Thinking ahead, I don't want my jewelry stolen.

Where do you do all keep your jewelry so it's not taken?

I have insurance...lots of insurance...on most of my pieces and keep them at home in a jewelry armoire. Three particular pieces that are worn occasionally and worth a lot, I didn't insure. I just couldn't afford any more jewelry insurance! I have those in my safety deposit box at the bank.

I have been either selling the unique pieces or giving standard design ones away for the last few years.

There are a few pieces that remain in the bank safety deposit box until I have an occasion to wear them ( fewer and fewer as the years go by ). The jewelry I wear everyday: wedding band with engagement Diamond mounted in the center, two mixed white and yellow gold bracelets, pair of white and yellow gold swirl earrings, watch. One pair of matte white gold wide, flat surface earrings for dress.

As I got older and the white streak in my dark hair got wider, all-yellow gold near my face didn't look right. So, it became easier to eliminate all that color gold.

Necklaces seem to come from Chico's....the long styles work best for me and they are usually leather or corded.

As for Fall-colored clothing....no longer looks good so my makeup stays the same.

I pick a favorite item (with pockets) in my closet and keep expensive jewelry in one of the pockets.

What burglar is going to go through the pockets of everything in your closet?

I have a Lori Greiner jewelry armoire, the one that looks like a standing mirror in my walk in closet. I do keep my everyday pieces in my Colleen Lopez anti tarnish jewelry box on my nightstand. We did have a break in once when we lived out in the woods, even with the alarm system they had time to empty some drawers as they were looking for jewelry and cash. Neither of which we leave hanging around........thankfully they didn't even enter the closet area where I kept the armoire in that house too.

@KingstonMom That's a good idea regarding the "pocket" thing but make sure someone you trust knows about it. When my dad passed away many years ago my aunt told my mom that he had confided in her that he kept cash he was saving in the pocket of a certain suit jacket. Had she not told my mom, that jacket would have been donated along with everything else. It was a substantial amount.

I now have silver hair and have transitioned to while metals so over these last years I have given all of my yellow gold collection to my daughter to wear some now and the rest she has put in her enormous safe to keep for my darling granddaughters. I have also lifted several pieces to my mother and a beloved aunt.

I have a much smaller collection of platinum, white gold and sterling silver and of course, my wedding and anniversary rings. My jewelry is insured and I find since retirement that I don't need or wear as much as I used to.

I only have a few expensive pieces, and they're all insured so I don't really worry about it. I keep everything in the jewelry box on my dresser. I have sold or given away a lot of my jewelry over the years. I don't have a lot anymore.

@Shanus Ring has plug in indoor cameras. I have one trained on the door inside my apartment, on a shelf. A warning about the camera may or may not be required by law. One can set up an alarm sound or not. The camera has a small light that will go on when someone enters and the system is on. You can turn the system on and off via app or the internet. One can speak to someone through the camera.

Just wondering whether you sell your jewelry locally or a mail in service, and if a mail in, which one.

@NYCLatinaMe Thanks for the Ring info. I sell it all locally to the same fellow who has a chain of shops. Since he makes jewelery, he's anxious to purchase anything gold or silver, melt it down and turn it into sheets or wire to use for himself.

@Shanus On the Ring camera, maybe should have mentioned one is supposed to get an alert on the app when the camera is triggered by motion. One time it was triggered by an insect! Sometimes there is a delay in the notification, it's a little wonky.

And my Ring battery needs to be charged often no matter if the batteries are new or not.

My Blink gets bug triggered too, it's pretty funny in the spring when they start appearing again

@Shanus - We have a LOT of books - in almost every room of the house. Two of them are "containers" for special jewelry. If you looked at the bookcase you would never know!

We don't have strong box or anything. Any valuable jewelry I have are in the bank. Outside of that, my other jewelry is home. Have never been burglarized (although I was twice as a child) Yes, I've put some in the pockets of hanging clothes. The jewelry value at home is 18K gold mostly. I have a lot of gold. Still have not sold any. I plan to leave it to my son.

The pieces I keep are all insured for replacement value. Since i wear them on a rotating basis, I don't want to look in pockets, etc. to find them to wear...my luck I'd forget which piece of clothing and donate it at a later date.

When my Mom was quite sick and had hospice nurses 24/7, some of her jewelry "disappeared". When I realized this, I quickly retrieved all her good jewelry and brought it home.

The bank safety deposit box is not a great solution for me since I wear my jewelry on the weekend, too when the banks are closed.

I also feel it's important to enjoy the jewelry we have and wear it often. I didn't purchase it or was gifted the pieces to be hidden or put where I can't wear and enjoy it.
