DIAMOND STUDS

I've had diamond stud earrings for too many decades to count...inherited my first pair that were 1 ct. tw. DH upgraded me to 3 1/2 cts. tw for my 50th birthday.

Question: My earrings have a post that has several tight "clicks" to keep them from coming off until I want to remove them. One has the notches getting loose/worn out and my jeweler suggested re-setting them with a screw back, but I'm thinking they'd be difficult to take on and off...especially as I get older.

Anyone have studs with the screw back and what do you think about them?

I have those on my diamond studs. They are not difficult to put on but it seems to take forever to screw them on all the way. Same thing screwing them off. If you wear the studs all the time, not a problem.

My 1 CTW studs are like yours, they have the multiple stops to get them on securely. I worked in a high end jewelry store for a few years, we sold 4-10 CTW earrings and they were the screw on backs. You are right, they can be difficult, especially with my hands today. When I upgraded I had the screw ones done but am now ordering french wires. Mine will not have the 'fancy' work on them.

I have several pairs of stud earrings that have screw on backs.

I prefer this type of back for expensive stones. They are easy to put on. You only have to turn the backs a few quick times for them to hold.

I have some diamond studs with screw-back posts but mine have a push-on clutch where you just put the studs on like any other stud but to get them off you need to actually unscrew the clutches off the posts. Ask your jeweler for:

Push-on / screw-off replacement earring backs

Those come in different sizes so you'll need to take your threaded studs to the jeweler to have them measured.

I could not tolerate screw back earrings. My piercing is small since ears were pierced with a needle and I wore wire earrings for many years.

Got diamond studs 40 yrs ago in 14 kt gold with screwbacks. The screw portion of the post went into my ear and actually cut the flesh slightly. Way too painful. I had the jeweler change them to regular posts.

If your earring is becoming looser, maybe have the earring back tightened a bit at the jewelers?

@D Kay I wear my studs almost every day except a change to huggie hoops if I think I'll be a "bad area" or out shopping at night alone, parking decks, etc. I don't wear them or any jewelry to sleep because they poke the back of my ears. So yo recommend staying w/ the push on back and then have the one stud repaired to be tighter?

I am not a diamond earringgirl but have nice earrings that have screw backings and its not a big deal for me but I do also have some clear silicone backings that really do a good job gripping, and especially since the post has the screw things on the back to hold them. Have no Idea where I got them, but they weren't expensive and have worked for me. They are soft ones too, not squishy soft ,but not hard like silicone can be.

I had my diamond stud posts converted to the screw back for security. I agree with @PinkyPetunia the screw posts are bigger than my other earring posts, so they may enlarge your piercing. If you do change out the post, I would recommend you wear the diamond earrings for 4-6 weeks (like a new piercing) so your ear can heal from the slightly bigger post.

That's the most secure.

As a matter of fact, I have multiple pairs since I have 7 holes, but 1 pair didn't come with screw backs, so I paid a jeweler to convert them to a screw back.

My diamond studs are screw backs since I never take them off only to clean, I wouldn't have them any other way for security purposes.

I have two pairs, one of each. Since I never sleep with earrings, I do have to remove them often.

Screw backs are harder to work with when your fingers, or shoulders, don't cooperate.

Thinking of converting a pair into lever back.

@Shanus - DH gave me "eternity" (3 stone) diamond earrings for our 25th anniversary. They had the screw back fasteners, which I had never seen.

I asked if they could change them to a regular fastener, and the jeweler said I didn't want to do that. He emphasized the security of the earrings, and said I would have no chance of losing them.

I don't wear them much, mostly special nights out. But I allow myself 15 extra minutes to put them on!

I also take them any time we go away, even if I won't be wearing them!

@Shanus I used to work at a high end jewelry store and whenver we made or sold a pair of diamond stud earrings we always recommended getting screwback closures. When I received a pair of diamond studs from my husband we converted them to screw back.

As other posters mentioned it takes a little bit more time to put on but the peace of mind is worth it. Having worked in a store I have heard many sad stories of clients who lost earrings and regret not getting screwback closures in the first place.
