Today on HSN, Colleen is selling this Tanzanite ring.

Here is a fine quality Tanzanite stone.

They scarcely appear to be the same stone. Of course the quality would be reflected in the price. For $59., you just get a hint of what the color could be.

If you have a limited budget bit love the quality Tanzanite color, go for Iolite instead. It easily passes for high quality Tanzanite at a fraction of the price.

Wow! Wish I had known that a few years ago. I paid hundreds for my Tanzanite, not that much gem to it.

Tanzanite is so beautiful, the darker the more expensive. There is also a mid color "cornflower blue color" which is really pretty too. My mother purchased a pendant in St Maarten about 15 years ago with diamonds around the stone, very pretty.

I brought my tanzanite jewelry many years ago, the darker version which is more expensive but is so beautiful. I think I learned from Chuck at Shopnbc or whatever it was called about the color differences I use to buy a lot of my gemstones from his line.

I purchase a lot of gemstones when I use to travel to St. Maarten annually.

The really dark (AAAA) Tanzanite can look like blue sapphire. In fact, my friend has a dark Tanzanite ring and I thought it was a blue sapphire until she told me it wasn't. I prefer (AAA) Tanzanite b/c it has that distinct periwinkle pleochroic color change where it's difficult to see in the super darker stones. If I wanted a dark blue stone, I'd choose sapphire for it's durablity. Tanzanite is very soft.

JTV used to sell a decent amount of Iolite. Today there are only a few pieces on the website.

If you get gemshopping they have entire shows of what tanzanite ie supposed to look like. It is nothing like what HSN is selling, of course there is a great price difference. I would rather spend my money on something else than a poor quality gem.

Gorgeous AAA and AAAA tanzis on JTV and on Shop LC, dark blue color saturated. some tanzis look like glass, no color.

The Mohs hardness of tanzanite is only 6 to 7

The fluorite ring is from ShopLC dot com.

Fluorite is a very soft stone and I like that each of the points on the trilliant are protected. Makes it more durable to wear as a ring but I would have preferred a full bezel setting for that kind of soft stone.

I coud never afford a AAA tanzanite stone---I do like that stone. I actually have a 3 stone ring from Colleen that does have the blueberry color tanzies in it and I paid right around $60 for it ,a few years ago--the stones are 5x3's. I bought 2 of them. But I also have alot of iolite too --and those also have that deep color blue as well.Think I got the iolites from QVC back in the day--all are set in sterling silver
