I Love Rocks

I've never seen anything like this. I have a strong urge to touch it, see how it feels; cold, slick, hard? So beautiful but what would you do with it?

Closer to home, Aquamarine is the state gemstone of Colorado. Found on Mt. Antero, problem is, you have to hike up about 14,200ft to find it and carry it out on your back.

Here's a specimen from Mt. Antero. The home-grown variety seems to have good color.

I have some rocks I've pickd up here and there. My husband works landscaping, digging in the earth, sometimes finds interesting rocks, fossils too and brings them home for me. He finds some great marbles too.

of course the 2nd one is really dreamy. Of course you'd have to climb a darn mountain for it.

Both specimens are beautiful! Well I learned something new about my adopted state and its state gemstone.

My sister lives in Tucson and she and many others here in Colorado talk about the Tucson gem show - week or month however long it is.

You'd have a ball there!

My husband has always loved rocks. We went to Sedona a few years ago and I have never seen so many rock shops in one town. I found some really cook rocks there to start my collection. We have since stopped at numerous rock shops, both on our travels and locally. I have a basket of colorful rocks on my office desk and on our coffee table at home.

There's this family of Colorado miners who are digging out large gemmy Amazonite with smoky topaz embedded in the specimens they got. I watched a show about their operation and it's really amazing what they are finding. Many of their finds are going to the Denver Museum of Natural History b/c they are worthy of that.

These smokey quartz 'Twin Brothers' were found in Colorado and weigh over 400 pounds each and are over 4 feet tall. These are the largest intact smokey quartz ever found in N.America. They were donated to the Denver Museum, too.

The story about the discovery of one of those large crystals is that it was hit by a county road maintenance worker while plowing the dirt road to smooth it out. The blade on the plow hit something hard and the driver got out to inspect the blade and found it had hit something sticking out of the road. History was made.

@Kachina624 Those crystals from Pakistan are gorgeous and

so perfect.

In my rock collection, I have a large, rough piece

of aquamarine from Maine. But, it does not have the

clarity or perfect crystal formations as the aquamarine

in your picture. That is just amazing.

@SilleeMee Those are beautiful formations of Amazonite and so pretty with the contrast of smoky topaz.

I have one small piece of Amazonite, not even a

full crystal.

Since I was a small child, I have always collected

pretty rocks and shells. My mother would clean my room and throw them all out. For the past 30 years, I have been purchasing stones and crystals at gem shows and in shops in the Northeast and now online too.

It is amazing that such beauty is found in nature.

I am fascinated by gems and rocks too. I went to Sedona on vaca a few years ago and into a shop of nothing but huge geodes and formations of gems in their host rocks---from tiny to gigantic---inside and outside there were rocks of all descriptions--was so much fun. I took a photo of an enormous clear crystal on the floor that was as long as my leg and wide as my foot!!

@rockygems123. Funny you should mention Tucson. My sister (from Pa.) and I have talked about meeting there and spending a couple of days shopping rocks. I could drive and pick her up at the aitrport.

Probably just a pipe dream.

@SilleeMee. Those are commonly found in the MT. ANTERO/Mt. SHAVANO areas. I love Amazonite. It's the exact same color, I discovered, as the water in lakes and rivers in the Canadian Rockies area. I have a set of pieces from Michael V.
