Fine Jewelry Prices are Sky-High

Yes, I started watching QVC just to puchase lovely gold jewelry, and I have a great collection due to my many years of shopping.

However, I have to say I am amazed at how expensive the prices have become. It is not just the cost of gold--the markups are incredible as well. A long time ago I could buy QVC gold jewelry for maybe a little above daily gold gram weight cost--nowadays sometimes it is triple and up (and much more fragile)!

The diamonds are the same medium quality they have always been--no real improvements--just the addition of lab-created, which have no resale value. Some diamonds now are even single cut, a poor substiute for faceted.

I just saw the Effy show, and I used to buy some Effy pieces for less than one thousand dollars--now they are asking the highest retail prices possible! I stopped buying Effy when almost all diamonds went to single cut, and the gold became super light weight.

Believe me, the estate jewelry dealers will laugh at me if I bring a new piece to them and tell them the price.

Yes, it is fun to watch, and I would take any piece of jewelry as a gift, but I am now super cautious about purchasing something, even if I like it a lot, because of the high costs.

Many things are just more expensive now (post-pandemic). I love pretty jewelry, too, and I've often had the same thoughts you have expressed.

I used to buy on QVC, HSN, JTV and my local jewelers.

I started buying when gold was $220 an ounce, now it's $2060. I stopped buying jewelry a while ago. Grateful

I have so many lovely pieces.

I also enjoy watching the jewelry shows, but no buying from QVC for me.

Thee are 2 local jewelry stores that sell a very nice selection of estate jewelry. I love my rings. A third store moved to a larger locating and their prices went up, so I no longer shop there.

I can try on the rings I like. Both stores give at least 10% discount for cash and no tax or shipping fees. I have a $$$$ gold & diamond ring on layaway at one store. No looking or shopping for me now. It will be quite a while until that ring is paid off and on my hand.

I agree - everything is more expensive now. I watch for a lot of jewelry items to go on sale and the sale prices sure aren't what they used to be.

Fortunately I have been buying gold and silver jewelry with and without gem stones for many years when prices were not out of sight. I have more jewelry than I will ever wear and a varied selection.

I will never buy another piece of fine jewelry and have no interest in doing so. I love what I have and glad for the prices I paid for them.

I'm glad I bought jewelry years ago when I did.

So sad pricing increased so greatly. Sad times we're living in now and it doesn't have to be this way.

I always thought the other shopping channels had better prices & more up-to-date, cooler jewelry than QVC. Don't watch much jewelry anymore but when I do am astonished at prices.

@FancyPhillyshopper and others: I haven't purchased or "needed" fine jewelry for quite awhile, but why pay retail prices? Even Q's sales are too high. As with everything, they use easy pay to make up for over pricing.

I've gotten all my jewelry from "jewelry row" in NY. That's where DH is from and he purchased my diamond engagement ring and tennis bracelet there, too at a fraction of what they would have been retail.

Check out sarraf dotcom. Their prices are lower than Q and most retailers. Their customer service is great!

I'm still a big fan of Michael Valittuti's jewelry. @AZfem Since he moved off Shop HQ (or perhaps he's back there again - I can't keep track), I don't watch his shows that often.

I used to love his "mini" rings which IMO weren't so mini and the charms. I was fascinated with them and they were good prices. I was always impressed with the quality.

I agree about the prices, way too high. Actually the selection is nowhere like it used to be either. I am happy I bought my pieces when they sold by gram weight back in the late 1990 thru early 2000.

I got my Adorna 14kt gold 'claw' bangle today.

700 doesn't get you much these days. It's a good fit.

'small' fit and is plenty safe on just a little lee way.

Thin bangle. Back in my day would had went for 3-400

@KathyM23 Me too!!! My husband and I are retiring in two years and I will never buy another piece of jewelry again either. I have lots of beautiful jewelry that I keep in a large Lori Grenier mirror silver safe keeper.

Yeah, very nice and their size small fits me as well as the Manse cuffs. Very pretty. Just old enough to remember spending tad over 700 bucks back when gold was cheaper and would have been little wider.

When they say "and you can stack them" I knew then it would be narrow. Wouldn't hurt to buy another one, but, I won't. Taxes, are coming up . LOL
