Platinum Clad Question

I wanted to order a set of Affinity gemstone stud earrings and noticed they are platinum clad. Any concerns about the plating wearing off? I would be more concerned about a ring but wondering if earrings would hold up. They list as Sterling but when you read the description it says clad! Thanks

I have many sterling silver earrings that are clad, plated and overlay with other metals such as platinum, rhodium and gold. They mostly look the same after all the years of wearing them. I'd rather have sterling plated so it doesn't tarnish.

You don't really have a choice with platinum or rhodium plated jewelry. Nobody wants tarnished silver. You either get it. (It should last anywhere between 6 months to several years...depending how often you wear it) And you can always reapply it. It seems to stay on 18K the longest. Some of my 18K white & rose are over 20 years old and still looks amazing. It comes off faster on silver though. solved that problem with UltraFine. It doesn't tarnish and doesn't have any plating in it. So all of my silver is that. That or solid platinum. A bomb could go off, and it would not change in appearance. But platinum is rare & other than on diamond rings, hard to find.

I have a platinum clad ring that is about 10 years old. I have never had any issues with it and never baby it.

I was wearing a "clad" qvc ring years ago, and when I got out of my car, I slipped on some ice, and fell so hard that I knocked a stone out of the ring. The "clad" finish remained perfect. I too think it's pretty good stuff!

Sterling that's properly stored does not tarnish. I have a very large collection and I almost never polish a piece. I'm very careful to keep it in anti-tarnish boxes. I always close them tightly. Same if it's worn constantly. I've been wearing an arm load of Native American-made bangles for over 20 years. They're shiny and bright but have never been polished. I never remove them.

I have purchased several pieces of platinum clad jewelry from JTV, no issues with them. Me personally I do not buy jewelry I have to baby lol. It has to be durable. I purchase silver that is rhodium clad so I don't have to worry about polishing. I also have Michael valitutti's pieces which have paladium his rings wear like iron. This is the kind of jewelry I need lol

I have had many pieces of platinum plated jewelry and the posting has not worn off ob any of them. I have one diamond ring that I've been wearing a couple of times a week for about 15 years and the plating is fine. I looked at it carefully because I'm wearing it now. Gold plating does wear off after a couple of years.

It talkes quite a while. Anywhere from a year to 30 years. Dependes on how frequently you wear them, get water on them, etc. Rhodium plating is on gold too. But takes much longer for the plating to come off. You can always get the plating put back on. I have no patience with sterling. I just get the UltraFine. No plating and no tarnishing. Pure silver does not tarnish. It starts to tarnish once you put copper in silver. That's Sterling silver. They put copper in silver to make it strong. I'd rather put up with it being soft than deal with dirty tarnish. It's a one time cheap metal that became expensive and replaced gold. What a world we live in when the setting of a piece of jewelry is more expensive then the diamonds you put on it.

Yep @tessam . Platinum doesn't bond to silver like gold does. It's a different process. All "clad" or otherwise known as plated jewelry will eventually come away from the base metal. I assume in this case, Silver.

@tessam I have many platinum clad pieces from QVC from at least 25 yrs. ago. None of them, even rings, have platinum coming off them. It is a process that ismeant to adhere to the silver.

I think you're perfectly safe with your earring purchase.

After I retired from teaching and hurt my back at Dillards, I worked in Belk Fine Jewelry for about 5 years with a gemologist.

I saw wearing on the band of a ring and she explained it as "clad" from use and hand washing.

Earrings just sit in your ears and won't receive the rougher treatment of rings.

You should be able to enjoy the earrings indefinitely.

I'm a white gold gal, don't like sterling silver, so the platinum clad works for me. I have many platinum clad pieces and have no issues with them at all.

Thanks for the information, takes me back. I wish now I'd purchased more especially the round cut tennis bracelet.
