How about accessorizing our masks?

Obviously we are going to be wearing masks for a long time (maybe seasonally, forever). Why don't we start "enhancing" them with small pins or clips? Why not personalize a white one with fabric pins? Why not sell a lot that includes a white fabric mask and supplies to enhance it?

One of the reasons I am not wearing rings and watch is to keep safe. Washing hands a lot is enough: I would rather not have to clean jewelry during this pandemic climate.

Pinning items on masks may be inviting trouble. Why not draw on the mask to decorate / accessorize it ?

I certainly think piercing the mask and producing holes in it with pins to embellish the mask will defeat the purpose of a mask. Holes weaken the fabric and allow organisms in or out. Placing objects on the surface or perimeter of the mask will add weight and interfere with fit.

You can use indelible markers like colored Sharpies to decorate a plain mask or find masks with print fabric that appeals to you. I believe there are better ways to use clips and pins than to embellish the mask.

The mask serves a practical purpose that doesn't need to be accessorized. It's not a fashion item. Though it needn't be ugly, it is best not to be altered from its intended use.

A mask is a utilitarian object.

If you rewear it, it should be cleaned frequently

Putting jewelry on it could easily damage it.

Also, the virus could stay on hidden parts of the jewelry.

The pins would have to be throroughly sanitized.

I like my bling but my mask will not have it!

The mask I just tossed, I had drawn lips 👄 complete w/ red lipstick w/ my waterproof Sharpie. I spray it w/ Lysol when I come home, but after a few times, I throw it away and wear a new one.

I could see where pins or anything that would puncture the mask could hamper the effectiveness of the mask. During a FaceTime art hour with my GDs, we used crayons for the Girls to decorate their masks. The younger one was hesitant to wear hers...scared by others who wore the black plastic or rubberized ones. She said they looked like burglars. After drawing on a few hearts and flowers, it didn't seem as off putting to her.

I've seen some elaborately embroidered masks online. They are beautiful! BUT my thoughts are that they must be heavier, hotter and impede the flow of air.

Great idea, but not practical IMO.

Sorry but to me it seems like trivializing a serious and sometimes deadly issue. It's not about how we look, it is about being safe and keeping others safe.

No, thank you. It's already enough hassle to come home, take my mask off properly and place it into a wash bag that won't touch anything else, then wash my hands and face. I don't need to add touching and removing of decorations that won't hold up in the washing machine.

And while there's currently no evidence that coronavirus is bloodborne, I don't want to stick myself with a pin that has been exposed to the virus.

Instead, I'm treating the masks themselves as my accessory and buying them in beautiful fabrics and colors that go well with my skin and hair coloring, the same way I would a shirt or a scarf.

This reminds me I had a great idea! At least, I think it is. Custom masks (disposable or reusable) where you upload a photo of your face to a website and the mask making company prints your face on the mask so you look like yourself again! I could be rich if make this happen LOL!

I would not want to embellish something that I cannot wait to rip from my face the second I leave a store. I like to breathe air. I also need to breathe air, and have a terrible time hyperventillating while wearing a mask, even for a short time. My wearing a mask to protect others nearby will do nothing to help them, because breathing through the mask makes me breathe out so much more carbon dioxide than I otherwise would without one. I think for that reason, wearing a mask may lead to the further spread of Covid-19 in some settings because not everyone can adjust to wearing something that obstructs the flow of air into and out of their nostrils and mouth. I feel suffocated wearing a mask, so I shop very quickly these days.

I have the utmost sympathy for everyone who must wear a mask for many hours each day, while at work. I recently read an article about two children in China who died while running in gym class wearing their mandatory face masks. I cannot imagine children here in the US being forced to exert themselves in gym class while wearing a mask, yet that is likely what is to happen when they return to school.

@Sooner - I'm just as afraid of this virus as you or anyone else. However, I like the idea of being creative. Since we're wearing these things, I like the idea of wearing something fun.

@Sooner It's looks like these masks will become an accessory for a few more months at least. As long as the decorations put on them, do not in any way puncture or hinder the mask's effectiveness, why not make it a little more fun to wear...like earrings or a bright tee lightens the mood?

@Jersey Born They are definitely not comfortable, you do get used to the masks and even if not, you are protecting others wearing a mask...no matter how much air you breathe out. Docs/nurses, etc. wear them to protect patients and theirs are much thicker/heavier weight. Be grateful those are not necessary for us.

Our gyms are closed and wearing a mask while exercising would be difficult since you're breathing deeper, heavier. If outdoors, remain 6' apart, your mask isn't needed.

That said, when I go in a closed area like grocery or drugstores and see people not wearing masks, I know they're not protecting others if they're infected or don't have symptoms...yet. I think it's a negative statement about their feelings towards others. IMHO.
