Hubby died; Tips on selling old QVC jewelry?

I have a lot of nice jewelry bought from QVC in the 90s & early 2000s. (It's all sterling silver and gold over silver so they weren't terribly high priced at the time.) My hubby passed away this year, however, and I need the money and I don't need all this jewelry just lying around doing nothing. (There are no kids to hand it down to either.)

I don't want to deal with the time-consuming process of ebay or a pawn store; or the danger of selling over Facebook, CraigsList or the newspaper because you have to meet strangers face to face. I also know i wouldn't get much selling to a jewelry store or 2nd hand store.

So I'm thinking about reaching out to friends and family by maybe setting up a separate (private) Facebook page where I can post photos with descriptions & prices. That way I can invite specific people that I think might be interested.

Are there some other ways I'm not thinking of? Has anyone else had to deal with this? If so, what did you do?

I would sell it on a neighborhood Facebook page. If you ask a reasonable price it should eventually sell it. Arrange any transfers in a public space, cash only and take a friend along (so you feel safe).

Well that's an option, but I guess I should've said that I don't want people knowing I have this jewelry in my home. (It's not diamonds and gold, but it is sterling and gems. Since I'm living alone, I really just don't want to risk it.) (We also don't have a neighborhood FB page.)

Your idea might work & you are right about not wanting to sell to jewelry stores, 2nd hand etc. They will give you nothing and very little interest. My experience at least.

I still have my jewerly. You don't get much so it's not worth the trouble of going on eBay. If you don't have "high end" jewerly brands, not worth the effort.

I'd try eBay and ship jewelry. You'll reach more people and not have to deal with meeting anyone which no one wants to do during the outbreak anyway.

I don't think you have to worry about people breaking in for sterling silver or overlay.

How about one of those consignment places? Wish I could help you. I will continue to think about it.

I do not think there will be any garage sales this summer.

I understamd your wish to be safe.

Do you live in a big town or a small community? If you need the money I doubt that you would get much no matter how you sell it.

This is the fastest, easiest way of getting rid of it but at the current price of silver, you won't get much for it. You won't get much for used silver jewelry anywhere but your best chance is probably on eBay.

I'm still thinking. Don't know how much money you need. If you check the prices on E-Bay ( Google QVC Jewelry) the prices are not too great. I will continue to still think. And Good Luck!

Your jewelry will get pennies on the dollar, that is, the pieces that sell.

If you choose to sell locally- Facebook marketplace, Nextdoor and Craigslist- I suggest you plan to meet the seller at the local police station. They are generally well lit and have 24/7 surveillance. A sketchy person will not complete the deal; a legit person will be happy to.

Cash only, of course That has worked well for me. Sold a car for cash that way.. Another option is the parking lot of the local Walmart during daylight hours. Always busy.

The ladies are right. Ebay is the very best you can do. Resale for 14 k gold is 50%. Silver is much lower, and overlay very, very low.

Is most of your jewelry from one designer? You might google, for example, a Judith Ripka fan club if you have lots of Ripka jewelry.

Jewelry stores are looking for gold/platinum (gold is preferably 18K and diamonds). Any gems or salt water pearls are secondary to the setting. They want that setting.It affects how much they're willing to pay you for the jewelry.

Unfortunately, you won'd get much for silver. Again, diamonds will help, but everyone is more interested in the setting.

Today's price for scrap silver is about $12.65 per ounce. Weigh it on a kitchen scale for an estimate.

I don't know you will get a lot more on e-bay considering the cost to sell it, your time, and shipping which isn't cheap anywhere today.

Maybe look up some comperable pieces on e-bay and then weigh it and that will give you a better dollar figure to go on. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck!

Do you think if you have a nice consignment you might try bartering the jewelry for something there that you would like or could use--purse, etc.?

@NorskyGal I'm sorry for your loss. There is a QVC HSN JTV Jewelry Addicts Buy/Sell group on Facebook. Maybe you could use a false name to protect your privacy? Ebay/etsy/Poshmark's prices are all over the place but you get results.

Can you please let us know about your decision and let us know how to find the items you are selling? I for one, would be interested. Do you have invoices or some record of your pieces? If not, I could help with that.

Too bad you are ruling out one of the Pawn America type stores. Ours is in a nice area and they immediately appraise and cut you a check.

@NorskyGal - I'm sorry for your loss. If you are looking to get money quickly, it really would be best to check out a pawn shop or a cash for silver option. Selling in any online marketplace requires significant time and effort, and sales can be very slow unless you have a truly unique item or a bargain-basement price (or both). Good luck!

@NorskyGal ....... When my husband died I took my jewelry to one of the jewelry stores and let them make an offer. It worked out well for me and I did it several times.
