Have You Ever Sold Gold?

I have several old gold ring mountings and I'd like to get rid of them. Have you ever done this? How much of the spot gold price did you get?

I'm curious. These are in my ring box and I ought to get rid of them!

You won't get much for them, unfortunately. You may be better off having them melted down and made into a pendant or something else.

@Sooner Years ago when they had gold parties I sent my friend with a couple of broken pieces and thin chains and an old ring.I told her I wanted two hundred dollars or just bring my pieces back.I got 850 for that junk and I was in heaven.I don’t know if they still do those parties but gold was high at that time.I guess you need to make up your mind ahead of time how much you are willing to sell for and then check it out.

Don't know about price but my mother and grandmother used to take theirs to a local jeweler and he'd take it and offer and pay on the spot.

If you want to check price, not sure if it exists anymore but it used to be in the paper financial section every day as to what gold was going for an ounce. Probably have to google it now.

@SoonerDepends how heavy they are and I'm sure you know whether they're 14k, 18k, etc. You can take them to a local jeweler and see what they'll tell you and what they'll offer you - you don't have to accept. You may be able to get more online, but I haven't sold that way for years so I don't know where is best.

Last time I sold a piece of gold (one heavy super ugly ring) was 6 years ago. I sold to the jeweler where I wanted to buy something rather than chasing for the very highest amount I could get. My impatience probably cost me a few dollars, but not really all that much and that ugly ring was something I found - so I no invested money.

Gold prices fluctuate so much but at the end of the day,

a penny would’ve been welcomed. I stopped wearing

all my 80’s gold/diamond jewelry collection decades ago

so it was just gathering dust. It felt good to release stuff.

I wasn’t selling it for any other reason.

i have a local jewelry store i deal with when i want to sell my gold. they have been in business for over 100 years and i trust them to give me a fair price. they sit down with me, test everything, and then give me a price. i am not obligated to sell to them. if i want a store credit they give you 50% more. for example, if they want to give me a check for $1000 right then and there, if i decide to take a store credit, they will give me a gift card for $1500.

There is a company in NY that everyone here used to sell their gold back when it reached the ridiculous high (and really never came down much).

I am getting ready to sell all mine. I just don't wear much jewelry anymore. I also have broken chains, dented stuff etc.

I believe the name of the company is US Gold Buyers. I have to google to find it.

They send you an envelope, you send in what you want to be rid of, and they email you back what amount of money they offer. I believe they melt it down, but this company does not melt it before giving you the price. If you don't like the offer, they just send it back to you.

If you agree to the price, they are very prompt in paying.

You make more money selling it to companies that melt it, as sad as that is. I do have some omega's that I bought 20+ years ago when gold was low and the Q sold jewelry with high gram weights. They are beautiful so I am having a hard time parting with them, but they are worth SO much more than I paid for them.

look up the price of gold, and see if it worth it to you. If so take it to 3 different jewelry stores that buy gold and compare. Has to be done on the same day as gold prices fluctuate. They will weigh the gold and tell you how much

I sold some gold about a year ago to US Gold Buyers. I called around my area to jewelers to get their price per gram and US Gold Buyers were still the highest. They are in Florida now I think. Just go to their website to see what their payout is today, then when you get quotes from local jewelers you will know if you are getting a good deal.

First you should know what the weight of your gold is - I just used a little postal scale and it gave me a fairly accurate weight. If you use US Gold Buyers you can fill out a form online and they will email you a Fedex mailing label. When I sent mine in they called me within 24 hrs with a quote and I had my money the next day. If you don't want to pay a wire fee they will mail you a check.

I've sold to US gold buyers many times in the past. How much do your pieces weigh minus the gemstones if there are any set into them? Do you know the Karat the gold is? USGB has a payout on their page with fluctuates with the market.

How does it work if the gold has stones in it. For example I have lots of old diamonique pendants and rings in 14 karat. Then I also have some things in 14 karat that have real stones, some peridot, some amethyst, two with tanzanite & diamonds that I wouldn't mind unloading. If you send it in or even go locally to a gold buyer how would they weigh the gold? Would you have to agree to let them take the stones out to weigh the gold?

Good question. I imagine you could call them and ask what the protocol is for stones.

I didn't even think of the way too many rings I own, they are all set in gold too.

I need to get on the ball and get this done. The money sitting in my jewelry box is not helping me

Even though your stash may be small, I would take it to several different jewelers to get an estimate. Take the best one.

I have sold several pieces ( bracelet, watch, scraps ) to a gold buying firm that travels the country. My regular jeweler advised me to take the pieces in. He said that the jeweler who sponso4s the company is very reputable. Got even more than my jeweler thought it was worth !

Sometimes when I have pieces repaired or redesigned, I have my jeweler “ buy “ the scrap. This way I don’t accumulate unnecessary stuff ! Win- Win.

About 10 years ago when the price of gold was through the roof DH & I gathered up our disguarded pieces.Odd earrings, broken bent necklaces as well as pieces I no longer needed that had no sentimental value.

We took the items down to a local jeweler . We cashed it out for close to $4000 in cash!!

Today gold goes for a little over $1200 per once.When we cashed out it was about $2000.

You have to decide for yourself if it’s worth it.You can always check it out & then decide.

@Sooner I sold a lot of my heavy gold pieces I bought in the late 80's - the 1990's that when good prices were like $100 a gram.

I sold my gold jewelry about 6 years ago when gold peaked over $3,000 a gram . I just went to a broker who buys gold, coins, jewelry etc. they looked at my goods....weighed each piece out and gave me a quote.....

on a diamond one carat necklace on a gold chain, they quoted me a price....and I came back with a counter offer which they took, so you can squabble with them on the price. I walked out with a $20,000 check for jewelry I never wore! I was happy!

The price of gold is no mystery, you can find the price daily where ever you look at stock & commodities prices.

It's approximately $1200 per ounce, which makes it around $42 per gram.

I have sold gold to a local business dealing in coins, gold, silver and other collectibles.

The man has been in business for decades.

You also may have good luck at a reputable pawn shop dealing in coins & collectibles.
