Pollution Diamonds

Just read in the NYT that a new thing is "Pollution Diamonds". Various cities, such as Beiijing, have installed giant towers that suck out pollution, which are then made into "diamonds"( turns out that pollution has a lot of carbon). This is a "thing" with couples that want a green wedding ceremony.

Well, they are going to be using so much energy to suck up that much polluted air that they will just make pollution worse by burning more coal! Why don't they just skip the burning step and turn the coal into diamonds? Oh, wait, that was Superman's gig! Oh, well, there's no accounting for the multitudinous ways people can delude themselves into believing they are doing something good.

Thanks so much for that, Camille. China is the biggest polluter in the world (followed closely by India). What's even more brazen than its attempt to deflect that ugly fact is the media's complicity in it.

I think the point of this process is to supply breatheable air, not necessarily to make diamonds. Can't believe whatever process they are using would burn coal. But this whole thing may be just a rumor.

Sounds like a classic lemons-into-lemonade, but you have to wonder how much energy it takes to convert that carbon into diamonds. After all, if it was easy, more people would be doing it.
