Where online can I buy a loose gemstone?

I would go to one or two local jewelers, so that you could discuss what you want in a gemstone. Colors vary greatly. I would also read up on amethysts before so you know what you want in the gemstone. Like everything else there are different grades. You can get an amethysts for a few dollars or thousands.

I don't know the size of stone you are looking for but if it's not big you might want to consider buying more than one. @Squirrel Lover. I've had my jeweler order stones to fit into a setting. They can make sure the size and shape is compatible with the setting, then set the stone when it arrives.

@geegerbee I would have recommended them many years ago but not now.

I for sure would go to a local jewelry store, talk to them, agree on a price and a quality and get them to get some stones on approval. If you like them have them set the stones.

I would be careful going to a local jeweler as most are not experts in gemstones. They generally specialize in diamonds and there is a vast difference between gemstones and diamonds. There are many excellent precision gem cutters on line. Some are Gemfix, Jeff White is an award winning precision gem cutter, Finewater Gems, Gem Art, Pariba International, and you can just Google precision gem cutters for other websites. Good luck in your search -- I LOVE colored stones!

Buying a new amethyst ring might be a better option than having to replace a stone in your older ring, unless of course, it's a special ring.

I have been dealing with Multicoulour.com for over 20 years. They are located in Thailand (one of the top locals for gemstone cutting). They are 100% legit and ship safely/insured via FedEx. I have never had a problem. All stones I have purchased from them (probably over 15 by now), have tested genuine and appraised for more than I paid. I have had several hi-end rings made using stones I purchased from them; my favorite being a 3.75 ct Tanzanite ring. The color of the stone is unlike anything available in the States. I will admit that I was nervous to make my first purchase thru them but am sure glad I did. The stones are shown true to color and size and each one comes with a GIA report. I am not affiliated with them in any way but I wouldn't go anywhere else for loose stones, especially a shopping channel - just my opinion for what it's worth.

If youre looking for something to fit into your setting, your jeweler is your best option. You probably need a caliberated stone to fit into the setting. If you do and you don't buy one it will cost you much more to modify your setting than if you bought one to fit from your jeweler in the first place. Not all settings can be modified. Find a bench jeweler who does work in house that is a GIA gemologist.

I would definitely check ebay also. You just have to read the description and make sure it isn't manmade, but lots of jewelers are on there also. If it's a really low price, it probably isn't real but lots of good prices on the real deal too. Good Luck..

It's been a while but I used to get them from JTV. I don't trust their jewelry but I did have good luck with loose gems.

@esmeraldagooch I agree. “You get what you pay for”. An online bargain isn’t always what it seems. A jeweler has many resources and can usually find the exact stone size needed.

@Shanus I agree with you, Ebay for instance is now a hot bed of fakes that are simulated to appear like the real deal. I would be reluctant to buy gems there anymore unless the seller was someone I trusted.

The pearl information site Pearl Guide did a piece on pearls on ebay. Most all the sellers tested were selling fakes or were misrepresenting the pearls being sold.

Ebay should be ashamed for letting this theft go on. Even if you alert them, they won't take the items down.
