Here's a good example why QVC is in the dumps on their jewelry sales. Nancy and Jeff Moseley are waxing poetic over this adulterated turquoise stone that's a manufactured product invented by Marty Colbaugh of the Kingman Mine. They act as though it's a wondrous invention just discovered.

In reality, Jay King was selling this stuff 15 years ago; he even had it in purple and a nasty yellow-green. For some reason he quit selling it a long time ago. Maybe his customers were knowledgeable enough to know it's junk.

Shame on these two so-called "gem experts".

@Kachina624, I just happened to be "channel surfing" when I came upon their presentation.

They were trying to put a new spin on this jewelry.

I listened for awhile and I was thinking exactly what you posted.

I think Jay King stopped buying lots of stuff from Kingman when prices skyrocketed. Apparently, their friendship only goes so far. He's talked on-air some about why he doesn't buy much from Marty any more.

Kachina, are you saying that this is reconstituted Kingman turquoise? I mean fake turquoise. Is the Kingman mine not producing quality turquoise anymore?

Mojave turquoise is not natural turquoise is reconstituted. They add cooper to it. ShopLC also sells this, but also real turquoise.

The Kingman mine has small pieces of rough (genuine turquoise) which they put in a press with bronze or copper metal and scrunch it together with pressure to make a bigger piece of composite turquoise. It's all real material but the finished product is man made. @Squirrel Lover

Reconstituted is different from Mohave. Reconstituted is made by pulverizing genuine turquoise stones into a powder then they add a polymer to form a clay-like substance which can be molded or shaped into any size or shape.

I guess because this is real turq that is enhanced with copper to give it a bigger, more interesting look, they think people won't mind. I know turq has to be stabilized, but I don't want it enhanced with color or other minerals.

@Squirrel Lover. Yes and yes. The process is top secret supposedly done in China using Kingman scraps, pieces and material too soft for normal use. Yes, the Kingman Mine also produces quality stone. Its more composite than reconstituted, but it's not natural.

Mohave turquoise is like 'chicken nuggets'...they take little bits real stuff and smash it together to make bigger nuggets of real stuff.

There is turquoise characteristics of several specific mines that do naturally contain metallic pyrite, which looks like gold (fool's gold). The most famous was Morenci, my favorite turquoise. This mine closed years ago and quality stones are virtually unavailable today. I wore a ring yesterday that may be Kingman which has tiny specks of pyrite.

I love my Mojave Turquoise; I have pieces in green and in purple. I like the effect of the copper running through the turquoise. However it isn't a totally fake stone. They take real turquoise and pulverize it and add dyes and chalk. I like it because I can get huge pieces for not a lot of money. It's no different that cubic zirconia and moissanite. Shopping channels try make those sound like they have value too. One of the reasons why I like shopping with Jewelry Television is that they do such a good job of educating customers. I rather doubt that Jeff or the hosts actually said that Mojave Turq came from the mines just the way it appears. I'm pretty sure the explained the product and after that it would up to customer to make a decision about it.

Yes, it is a manufactured product. Paul Deasy explained the process a while ago, i remember. It was given that romantic name for the commercial purposes.
