Question about Divorce and Wedding Rings

I love my oval halo engagement ring and was thinking about repacing the center stone with a pink stone, but then wondered if I would really wear it. I also have two diamond bands. I really like the rings but maybe they just need to go away? What would/did you do with your wedding set? Thanks!

Hi @autumnnj .. I had a pendant made out of the diamonds from my engagement ring and wedding band.

Mine was a 5 stone band ring, I still sometimes wear it, as is or stacked, on my right hand.

There are many options, with the price of gold, you could trade it in and upgrade to something more appropriate for you. I'm saving mine for our daughter.

I'm not divorced, but my mom took the diamonds in her wedding ring when she divorced my father and had them used for earrings for me.

@autumnnjWould you wear it as a right-hand ring? I'd probably try that a few times just as it is before I'd have a different stone set in.

I'd probably find I could wear it as is. As for those bands - I'd also wear those on my right hand - could you use them to stack with a band of colored stones between?

But this advice comes from a wearer who bought a diamond band to wear on her right hand years after she divorced. It's still one of my favorite pieces of jewelry! Of course, mine has no connection to my ex, no bad memories attached.

I looked into selling my rings. Jeweler suggested to hold on to them unless and until I needed to sell them. My wedding band is a beautiful 18k/ invisible set princess cut diamond ring. I wear it from time to time on my right hand. Matching setting for my solitaire. I do not wear that ring as the solitaire mountng needs to be repaired and I do not feel like spending the $ on it.

If you like the setting on your engagement ring I like the idea of replacing the center store with the gemstone of your choice.

Sadly, marriage is not always forever, but good, beautiful jewelry should be!

took the diamonds out and sold the gold to the jeweler......who gave me an in store credit. i then bought something i really wanted.

I love my wedding set, but it does scream "wedding set!!!". If I were to divorce (), I'd get the whole thing reworked into some other ring. I'd hate to waste those diamonds and gold!

autumnnj, some people wear inherited engagement rings, just switch them to the other hand. Bands can be moved around and are versatile stackables.

The one reason I would now be conservative about re-working rings into other things, is that I've done that quite a bit in the past, and it is expensive to do. There's no guarantee that you will like the result better than the original.

I like the earlier suggestion of just switching the ring over to the other hand as a lovely cocktail ring, and see if you can overlook its past meaning to you. If not, then you have all the other options to consider...

I think I'd put the stones into something completely different. For the most part, the whole halo think kind of screams bridal to me, even with a colored gemstone.

If you don't care about that, then just go for it and do what you love!

Had the stone reset into a VERY different design and use the gold from both for melting down for the new ring. I now have a gorgeous ring that cost me very little to create; you would never know it was once an engagement ring and a wedding band. : )

Everyone is showing halo settings now days, at least on TV. So Bridal is the last thing I think of when I see one of these.

I do love the "Halo" look. However, something new will come along and even the Halo will be dated.

A creative jeweler can assist you in designing something totally different. My first diamond was 'matched' by my second (&last) husband for a set of stud earrings. Now that diamond is in a custom bangle bracelet with several other diamonds graduating in size.

My theory is never waste a good stone!

My mother had two diamond solitaire rings, one was hers, the other her mother's. After she died, my sister had each made into a pendant for her two daughters. I gave sister the diamond ring our aunt left me. I took all the turquoise which I like better than diamonds.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. It makes sense to wear it on the right hand to see if I am actually comfortable doing so before deciding if I want to repace the stone. If not, a completely new design is probably a good idea.

Sounds like a nice idea. You could sell it if you wanted and then buy something else with the color stone you want. Do you like Morganite? I love this color of Beryl. Kunzite too, but you wouldn't be able to wear it all the time (especially during the day) because of it's tendency to fade.
