Shoes with platforms

Watching the Skechers show - so many if not all of the shoes have platforms. I don't get it. Why would I want platforms on a sneaker? And the sandals with a platform I'd be afraid of falling off of them.

Why? Because at 5'1" it gives me a boost. Most of my friends are much taller and sometimes I just don't care for being so short.

I love platforms and I'm glad they are back in style. I can't wear heels but platforms are comfortable and I feel steady walking in them.

I wore platforms in the 70's and on and off since then. I am 5'2". I kind of like platforms on sneakers, at least one pair in my stock as I like variety.

I am 5'1" and love platform shoes. When I worked as a hair stylist, I wore platform shoes everyday in the shop.

They were that comfortable that I could stand for over 10 hours a day in them. Many stylists wear them to work in.

I don't wear sneakers, but I do wear sandals and clogs with platform soles.

I have a bad knee and one that has been replaced and have never fallen off of them or fell while wearing them.

Another 5'1" and I LOVE platforms and the height it gives me. Also, I think it makes me look thinner.

I don't know what they have here, but all of my Skechers are platform. I feel more stable in them that flat shoes.

Haven't seen the presentation but can you bend your foot in platform shoes? It seems to me that you would just clomp around in them which doesn't sound too comfortable to me?? I can see the appeal if you're short but at 5'6" I don't want to be any taller!

@kaydee50 My feet bend in them like the do with any other decent quality shoe.

All shoes had platforms in the 70s and early 80s. I'm surprised I didn't break a leg back then. As usual, what's in just cycles around again.

I remember wearing platform shoes in the 70s and 80s. Platforms on sneakers and most other flat type of shoes give some height, make your dress pants or jeans fall better and can be very comfortable and flex with you as you walk.

Having said that, some other platforms that resemble a pump with a defined heel, usually made of wood or hard plastic for a faux wood look, are stiff and can be downright dangerous to walk in. All you need to have happen with one of these types of platform is step on a small stone and you're off balance immediately. Get ready for a twisted ankle, an ER visit or worse. Take it from someone who experienced it first hand back in the day!

Last week, I noticed Clarks on QVC showing a pair of platform wedge sandals. Here's a picture of the type of the Clarks sandals I'm referring to.

I am ashamed to say I had a white patent pair of platforms back in the 70s. Wow, what was I thinking!

The only time I ever fell wearing platforms was while I was young and in NYC. It was raining really hard and I walked into Macy's flagship store.

I knew I was looking good and strutted my stuff. I had on a short mini dress and espadrilles with a high platform wedge. Back then, there was no rubber on the sole....just wrapped jute.

When the jute got wet, it was slippery. I strutted into the store and when I stepped off the rug inside the door, and onto the hard surface area, my feet slipped and fell forward and face planted, with my short dress exposing way too much.

No one payed me any attention or even helped me up. They just walked right passed me. I was so embarassed, but got up, smoothed down my dress and kept on going.

I never wore those shoes again in the rain and never bought another pair of espadrilles with jute soles.

I still buy and wear platform soles.

I can handle a small platform, but I can't wear or walk in the really thick ones. Even back in the 70s the platforms I wore weren't too high. I know some say platforms are easier to walk in than heels, but in my case I can wear and walk more gracefully in heels.

@Carmie I bet you looked fantastic in your platform espadrilles and mini dress! You took that fall like a pro and shame on the passerby for not helping you up. I remember when I was wearing a mini dress and platform heels in a salsa dancing class and the guy I was dancing with kept turning me too quickly and I fell and my dress rode up and no one helped me up- not even the guy dancing with me. I got back up and danced with someone else and I never danced in those high heels again. Falls happen- but getting back up and walking confidently is what you did and what I did and that's what matters

I love platforms and I have at least a half dozen pairs of platform sneakers.

I can't wear heels, but I love my platforms.

@GinaV24 It taught me a good lesson. I was about 21-22 years old.

It's funny looking back, but I was so embarassed at the time. Thankfully, I always wore panties under pantyhose.
