It's not a surprise since I've been reading about Payless Shoes' troubles for a while on the Footwear News website. But according to the articles I've read, Payless will be closing at least 400 stores in the U.S. I'm not sure how many stores in Canada will be affected but I imagine that they will close some of them too. The Payless Shoes store that I've seen in the mall looks empty of shoppers.

It is ironic, retail stores are closing because people are buying products online. Years ago people would buy from catalogs, pay delivery, and wait for items to arrive, then shopping centers were built and people could shop without waiting and actually see the product without delivery fees. Today it is the reverse. People wait for product, pay fees and finally touch and see the item. There are just some items you need to see and fit before buying.

Payless, another retail store gone into the brick and mortar grave yard.

I think Payless target audience was younger people looking for decent shoes $30.00 and under. In the 90s my sister and I shopped there quite a bit.. I recall getting pumps for our office jobs. Sometimes sneakers. Basic shoes.

That target audience no longer needs to do analog shopping. For myself, I will buy inexpensive shoes online. I am happy with DSW for the pricier ones.

Brick and mortar stores have to get themselves online. Even TJMax has an online presence.

I haven't been in a Payless store for many years. Can't believe they aren't making money there. Cheap shoes that are poorly made. A friend bought sandals there and we were at a summer wedding last year and her shoes fell apart while dancing. It was funny at first but she had no backup pair and drove home barefoot.

As an occasional shopper at Payless, I feel that they did this to themselves. Their shoes are fine for fashion, not quality. Their prices have become too expensive for the quality of the product.

It used to be that I could get "one season" sandals for a cheap price. Not anymore!

I once shopped there in the early 2000s for casual sneaker type shoes, fisherman's & other sandals & other similar weekend recreation styles. I never shopped for heels or dressy shoes (before I doscovered Ross, Marshall's). They were at that time decent quality for the price and I took advantage of the BOGO half price sales.

But as the years passed, even before my plantar fasciitis and Achilles issues, the styles became not what I wanted and the materials in the shoes got really cheap. They became K-Mart shoes; even Target's were better.

I think they just cheap kwapped themselves out of business.
