What do you think about the Dooney & Bourke Roxbury Watch that's new today (Sunday, 11/23)? I love it! So nautical! Great colors! Do you think men could wear this watch as well as women? I hope it's in the D&B show soon! http://www.qvc.com/Dooney-&-Bourke-Roxbury-Watch.product.J318174.html?sc=J318174-WNEW&cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-36-_-J318174&catentryImage=http://images.qvc.com/is/image/j/74/j318174.001?$uslarge$

At that price, the bracelet should be ceramic. (Never heard of an acetate bracelet. Is that the same as silicone?)

EEL: it's a nice looking watch, but in my mind it's just a fashion watch. The specifications lead me to believe that the components of the watch were selected for looks alone. Just a few things that concern me: bracelet is acetate, not stainless steel or ceramic, material for the crystal over the dial is unspecified, no information on the origin of the movement. As a watch collector I look at all these details and evaluate the look of the watch against the price and quality of the components. For me, this watch doesn't pass.

Regarding your question on whether a man could wear the watch.... they say it runs large, but don't give bracelet lengths. My guess is that if his wrist was 7.5" or less, no problem. Larger than that ????. Maybe. But another concern is regarding the size of the case...1 1/2" diameter is about 37mm. That used to be a mens watch size. But now most men are wearing 44mm and greater sizes. It's a matter of personal style and taste. Many men still wear the smaller more classic size watch. Also the crystals on the dial and the name Dooney & Bourke on the dial may or may not be something a man would enjoy wearing. Again, personal style.

Hi EEL! No experience with this watch, but did get a Dooney watch at a good price during last year's 12 Days... To be honest with you, this one doesn't do much for me and, like others, I think it's pricey for what it is... Personally, I'm sold on Issac's ceramic watches and think they're both better looking and a better deal...

Incidentally EEL, the good Mister is MOST concerned with this little foray of yours into watches... He fully anticipates installing a whole other bank of ovens, should this prove to be anything more than a minor flirtation...

Don't you have an Isaac ceramic watch if I'm remembering correctly? Does it flop around on your wrist due to the weight? Is it "noticable" (in feeling) on your wrist because of the weight? They are supposed to be super durable, right?

Holy cow, stevieb, no more ovens in this house!!! I am a bit of a wilting lily...

Oh yes, EEL, an entire bank of ovens... Why the Mister is considering opening a bakery just for you! He says he thinks it might help keep you out of trouble and, well, away from the shopping sites...

Yes, I have several of Issac's ceramic watches and no, to me, the ceramic is not unduly heavy at all. My watches do flop around a good bit on my wrist, but not due to the weight. I like them very loose and wear them bracelet style... so can't be a good judge of that factor for you... I do like the look of the ceramic watches, though, and while the Mister will probably not appreciate it one bit, I do think everyone should own at least... one.

I note no real size is given for the length of the Dooney watch bracelet, so it'd be hard to say what size wrist could wear one, but note that Issac's come in an extra large size, so a man could wear one, although the face of them is not significantly large. The face size would certainly not seem dwarfed on an average size wrist, man or woman, but for anyone liking a larger face, his might not measure up. I've been seeing some gorgeous larger ceramic name brand fashion watches at the TJ Maxx jewelry counter, including Kors, Armani, Nautica, Fossil and so on, both for men and women.

EEL: here is the deal with ceramic watches...from my personal experience, as I have several. Ceramic is a little lighter than stainless steel... but whether a watch will be light or heavy depends upon several factors including the size of the case, the movement inside, the width of the bracelet, and the thickness of the links. Most ceramic watches today are made with larger cases because that is the style. If a ceramic watch is sized for your wrist, it won't flop around. If you wear it loosely, it will, just like any watch. And a ceramic watch should be sized (by a jeweler) because you don't want to bang the links around. Ceramic is very scratch resistant and dirt resistant... so a white (or other light color) will stay clean for years (you can wipe off any dirt) and on a dark color, like black, you won't see scratches. And a good ceramic watch has solid ceramic links which means the color won't peel off. (Don't buy a ceramic watch where the ceramic is a shell over a metal link). The one downside, if there is one, is that ceramic can chip or break if it is hit at the wrong angle. It happens to even the highest price ceramic watches if they are dropped on a hard floor or you bang into a door jam at the wrong angle.

Don't try to size a ceramic watch yourself or have your DH do it. Ceramic watches are generally put together with a pin and collar (little tubes) system to connect the links. The collar keeps the pin in place. But resetting the collar after taking links out is an art. Conceptually, it's very easy. Just put the link together and put the pin in and put the collar in and tap it gently into place. But the collars are very tiny and can easily be crimped. If the collars isn't put back into place properly, the pin can fall out and the bracelet will come apart.

Hope this helps. I love ceramic watches... both the look and the feel. I don't own any of Issacs.

BTW, we have a Watch Collectors thread in the jewelry section of the Q BB. Feel free to drop by and ask any questions and you will get more responses. The ladies who post there are very helpful.

Personally, I don't think a man should wear a watch which promotes women's handbags...but that just me....

On 11/23/2014 lavenderjunkie said:

Several, LJ?! Oh boy, they must be good! Thanks for telling me the deal with ceramic watches; it was very interesting to read and had a lot of good advice. Hmmm, I may need to try one at some point. I would definitely take a ceramic watch to our jeweler for sizing if I get one because just as I don't like floppy locks on the Dooneys, I don't like floppy watches on my wrist!

I have read some of the Watch Collectors threads with interest and know you are a guru! Thanks again for your wise advice. I decided not to go with this Roxbury watch after all, at least at this price. I remember past years during the 12 Days of Dooney there were watches offered at half of this price. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised one day and see this Roxbury at a better price.

EEL: Happy hunting. Nothing wrong with a fashion watch... as long as you know what your are buying and it's a good price for what you are getting. Problem is when we spend $$$ we expect our watches (or handbags) to last for years. If the underlying quality isn't there, then we will end up being disappointed far too soon. If we don't spend much, then we don't expect much and can enjoy the look and the fun, however long it lasts.
