A woman at Dillard's told me last week that they are shrinking their stock in high priced bags since they just "aren't selling like they used to". Blaming it on the economy. Who knows??

BTW, we weren't looking for Dooneys - trying to find a good Brahmin crossbody.

If they are cutting out D&B, it's not becaue of the "the economy". I would think it's because the market is full of designer name bags in the $300-500 price range and they can't complete with online retailers. I know if I were going to buy a Dooney this weekend, I'd buy online from Dooney itself. There are more bags to select from and I wouldn't have jump in my car, schlep to the mall and choose from the limited selection available in a department store.

I own 7 Dooney bags and only two of them came from the stores you named. And I'm not shopping at Macy's again after they wrote to Rick Perry and asked him to veto the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed in Texas last year. If they don't think women should be able to sue if they were unfairly paid, I don't think they need any money from this woman.

Competition from other brands, pure and simple... One of the local L&T's has cut back significantly on the floor space devoted to both Dooney and Brahmin and have filled it with, among other brands, Lauren, Kors and Vince Camuto... the last one doesn't compute at all...

I remember when Dooney and Coach were the only two higher end brands they had for awhile. Some of the larger military exchanges we visit will have Rioni handbags featured in a large supply. They seem to sell very quickly.

Kors, it seems, is everywhere. Almost like Makowski was a few years ago, though my personal thinking is this is a better line than that one ever was. Still, Kors is another one I see possibly burning itself out. I like the brand, but don't love it... and can't see myself wanting a slew of Kors bags. I have a couple, one of which is a recent purchase and likely to be returned, and that's probably enough for me unless the line unveils something really irresistible. I have a few Rioni bags and they're actually very good bags and sold at nice prices. Coach makes some beautiful bags, but, to me, only at the upper end of their price spectrum.

As for Sephora and Philosophy, it's a brand I don't buy and won't miss.

At Macys the best selling brand is Coach, followed by Micheal Kors. Each of these brands have a huge stockroom with their brand only, and an associate who served as a "specialist" for each. When I worked there at Christmas I saw that Dooneys back stock was a tiny 3 shelf unit that was a mess and had styles that weren't ever put out on the floor. Dooney was housed next to Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. The ladies that worked there told me it doesn't really sell like Coach and Micheal Kors. I showed it to a lot of customers since I know a lot about it from watching here but they just weren't interested. If the Dooney rep ever went in there she would prob have a heart attack over that back stock. ( I have also worked as a vendor) now on Macys.com there is a huge Dooney presence so maybe it is the market where the store was located. Anyways I found that you can get a terrific deal on marked down Dooneys in the store. If you see something you like always check the price they have a lot of specials too. Brahmin was right up front and had a lot of styles so I imagine people still love it. I have one but Dooney is always my first choice. I offered to be the Dooney specialist and they had a good laugh over that.
