Are Dooney Really "The" Designer Bag?

I see a lot of Dooney bags on QVC and in stores. But when I look at other woman, they are always carrying Coach or an other designer. It seems like in my state Coach is the designer I notice most often. Once in while I see a Burberry, but they are very expensive so I know that is why I don't see as many.

I myself have several names. Marc Jacobs, Tignanello, Dooney and Bourke, Coach, Vera Bradley, B. Makowsky, The Sak, and some Burberry. I never thought much about Dooney until QVC. I think some are too heavy, but I have quite a few that are not. Kate Spade is a big name here.

QVC hosts always say Dooney is "The" designer bag to own, that everyone wants one. Which bag do you girls find is most desired or is in your opinion. Just curious. I forgot, I do see a lot of Vera Bradley bags, but not on younger woman.

Whether dooney is designer or or not, I don't care. I just like dooney bags. Not into Cosch because I can't stand the large C's all over their bags. Also, they're a dime a dozen. Seen one seen them all.

NO ... they are NOT ""the"" bag ..... QVC only sells a lot of them because they offer 6 easy pays. You think people would buy those bags if they weren't on easy pay?

In my part of the ""world"" Michael Kors is the bag I see everywhere. I see coach too but lately too many MK bags. Dooney not at all!

Dooneys were THE aspirational bag to have as far back as 30 yrs that I can remember. They're worth every penny because they last. When I see a Coach purse NOW, it screams, 'I went on vacation somewhere near an outlet mall.' EVERYONE has a Coach now - nothing special about them - unless you buy a $400 LEATHER Coach from a Coach store. I will never understand the appeal of Vera Bradley. They remind me of potholders. Very expensive potholders.

Not a very intelligent statement. I rarely purchase dooneys from QVC. They're offered at a million different stores. I get mine on sale outside of qvc and I had no idea that men carry handbags. Very masculine, thanks for the laugh. I needed that. Enjoy your Saturday. There is life outside of QVC.

Everyone has thei favorite brand. There is no one brand to top all others. I favor D&B because of style, durability, lux looks. I firmly believe that accessories make the " look" . Always add the right bag, shoes, jewelry etc to whatever I wear. Turns plain into gorgeous.

There is no "it" bag, as far as I can see. Dooney makes nice bags and they're a desirable brand, one among many. They do have a certain history and track record, but the hosts are pushing this brand, so of course they'll put it out there as the only "it" bag... Personally, I like Dooney bags and prefer them to many other 'nicer' brands, but don't limit myself to just one brand of handbag.

There is a Purse Blog (purseblog.com) and a lot of discussion of which bag pleases whom. I like Dooneys. Never been a REALLY expensive bag person. I like bags that last and I used to use Coach for years, until they went to logo cloth. After than I didn't care for Coach, so for a while I just bought Tignanello but my first Dooney was a real success. I love it (a Janine bag bought here) and when I carry it, I get a LOT of compliments. I have a professional career and bag and shoes are really important but I hate spending megabucks and I tend to carry a fave bag so I don't own a closet full of them.

For me, Dooney's have a good look, last well and hold up but still have that expensive air.

As someone else said, I don't know if Dooney is the "it" bag but I can tell you I splurged on one and I love it. It's beautiful, a clear, pure red, and it'll last a lifetime. I got it ON SALE at about $250; that's a lot of money for a purse but I'll use it forever.

But price isn't always the indicator of quality; I bought a hobo-type shoulder bag at Target for $30 a couple of years ago. I use it all the time and it's holding up well.

I totally agree with tinkrb144...............your analysis is SPOT ON and intelligent! Heavy over decorated bags with tassels and buckles and cheap thin shoulder straps (when do exist at all). I need a handbag for money, glasses, etc., and when I do need luggage = I use luggage!

I have 3 Vera bags - Happy Snails, Poppy Fields, and Summer Cottage. I like the colors/prints of those and I can put them in the washer when they get dirty. I got them on sale (60% off) and they are perfect for the beach or when it's raining since they aren't leather.

Dooneys are my favorite bags and my next one will be an Alto in T Moro Brown.

I don't know if there really is an "it" bag. Each person has their own favorites. I see lots of Kate Spades and Coach and DB as wells MK, where I am.

I used to love Coach until they did their outlet line. I think doing that cheapened the brand. DB has outlets but you do not see bags designed just for their outlets, you see over stock and current season and last season bags their.

I love handbags and have a variety. Coach Courtney (all leather) is one of my favorite styles. I love my DB bags, they are beautiful and wear wonderfully and I have Brahmin and Cole Haan. I just ventured into orYany and I love the bag I got.

I think all brands have winner styles and loser styles. Get what you love and make that your "IT" bag.

ITA!! I suffered from shoulder and neck pain. I got rid of the heavy leather bags and the shoulder and neck pain.

There are only a couple of Dooney styles that appeal to me and I haven't seen one yet that I felt I absolutely had to have. I have all the brands mentioned in this thread plus some. But what I really want is a Fendi and a LV. I would much rather take the money I would spend on a Dooney that I don't really love and save it toward a bag I really want.

Completely agree that the outlet cheapened the Coach line. I have a closetful of Coach that I don't carry. My handbag of choice is Michael Kors now. Personally, I don't think Dooney is an "it" bag. I think they make some nice bags, but I think they're more popular with an older crowd, which is perfectly fine, but the older crowd doesn't generally dictate what's "it". At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter as long as the person carrying the bag loves it. My sister and I (28 and 31) love our MK, our mother is perfectly content to carry a Vera Bradley bag I got her 2 years ago. Whatever floats your boat

Marebrown: If you are getting ready to purchase an Alto, call one of the Dooney outlets. They have many of the Alto styles, and they are now 50% off. I've ordered by phone from the Clinton CT outlet, the Reading PA outlet, and the Las Vegas outlet. All were great to deal with. Doesn't matter where you live, if the bag is available for shipment (not all are) the outlet will send it to you at the sale price (or if they don't have it in the store, will have it shipped from the warehouse). Just remember to ask them to check the handbag over carefully to be sure it's in great condition and the zippers are good. And ask what the return policy is just in case you have an issue. (Return policy will vary depending upon the type of sale and where the item is shipped from).

Try not to call on a weekend as they are very busy. I try to call first thing in the morning during the week. I've gotten great service. I just ordered an Alto from Clinton outlet.

I'm not a Dooney fan. I like Coach much better. And I don't think I've ever seen anyone carrying a Dooney bag when I'm out and about. I do see them in stores obviously -- just haven't seen anyone carrying one.
