Coach Factory Question

I apologize if this issue has been discussed previously on the handbag forum. I did a search and couldn't find an answer.

I've seen discussions here that the bags which end up in Dooney Outlet Stores are "regular" purses, as opposed to specifically made for outlet distribution.

In contrast, I've heard that Coach DOES make a line specifically meant for only their outlets. That these are inferior in quality. And they make a higher-end, better quality purse for retail.

Is this true?

I shop the Coach outlet stores and their outlet on line and the sale racks at my local Lord and Taylor and I find the quality the same in all three locations

I've heard the same rumor, and have no idea if that is true or not. However, I do all of my Coach shopping at an outlet store. After careful examination , I can find no difference in the bags I purchase from the outlet and the bags I used to buy at retail. I've had outlet purchased bags for 10 or so years, and they have held up and look as good as the day I bought them. I will say that I take very good care of my Coaches- I have so many that I change bags fairly often and store the one not being used in their own Coach drawstring pouch. I can honestly say I am very happy with my Coach outlet purchases.

Hulagirl, does that mean that the items for sale in an outlet are a mixture of regular retail and made-for-outlet?

I have seen both at the outlets. I have seen some of their better bags but a lot of outlet only items. I love the Legacy Leather collection and have never seen those their.

Yes.....I think the regular retail in the outlets is mdse. that might be last years styles or some that didn't sell out from their reg. stores. You are able to tell regular from made-for-outlet styles by the serial number.......I forget how to tell, but Google how to tell the difference between Coach outlet/regular made bags and there are sites that tell you that info. I do think "F" might be included in the outlet-made bags.

Coach Bags made for the factory stores have an "F" at the beginning of the serial number. And yes, 90%+ of the bags in the outlets are made for the outlets. Dooney does not, at least at this time, manufacture bags specifically for their outlets.

To add... I have owned many, many, many Coach bags. Both Retail and Outlet and I never found any difference in quality

That was going to be my next question, gilmoregirl........lol.

If there is no difference in quality, what's the point? Why have "outlets" where people expect to save money if in fact they are just buying merchandise that Coach has made for that price-point?

Seems all rather confusing to me

I think it's simple marketing. Coach still has their higher end lines, but if you notice they also now offer much more affordable lines at the full retail boutiques as well. Coach used to be a "status" brand of sorts, but not any longer. Everyone owns them. That being said, they are still great bags. Dooney's outlets are closeouts, customer and retail returns, overstocks, etc. Someone orders from Dooney dot com, gets the color at home and doesn't like it, returns it then it goes to an outlet. Same bag as you'll find anywhere else

There is a beautiful outlet near where I live. It's huge. Also I went with my daughter to the Coach outlet in Denver. Spent over $500 on several purses. They are all beautiful.

I was at a Couch outlet a couple of weeks ago and ended up spending 420 dollars. They handed me a 50 percent coupon when I walked in the door.

The girls that work there know which are the made for outlet bags and which are not. They had some good buys on large wristlets and I bought a satchel for 99 dolllars plus a nylon cross body bag. What I loved was a large leather clutch. They had it in a camel, blue, and red. I bought two of them and wished I had bought all three when I got home.

Yes, it's true that Coach makes bags specifically for the outlets. Usually the handles or straps are thinner, and the hardware might not be as sturdy. You can tell if a bag was made for the outlet by the style number on the price tag. If it begins with the letter F (for Factory!!), it's made for the outlet. Most of the "real", for lack of a better word, bags can be found along the back wall of the outlet. These are bags sent from Coach stores at the end of the season, or they may be returns. The clearance sections are usually at the back of the store on the right and left sides. Best tip I can give is to make friends with one of the sales associates. They will gladly give you the lowdown on which bags are which, and may even share when they expect deliveries from the regular stores.

I have been very,very happy with the quality of the Coach bags I have bought at the Outlets and I've also scored some Great prices on bags over from their retail (full price) stores.

I don't love all of the styles at the Outlet's, but, I certainly don't love all of their Full price bags, either.

One of their newest Factory bags/accesory lines, is the Ombre coloration. I think it's super cute, but, LOL, I so, do Not need anymore bags, right now. Still fun to look though.

I think this week-end, Coach Factory is having different sale promotions, starting on Friday.

I've been RECEIVING emails reminding me of the sale.

I have a young cousin, much younger than I, who lives in Doylestown and they are right down the road for Peddler's Village............a shop-a-holic's dream!!! They have a Coach outlet and I was wondering what to expect and whether to go. The line can be out the door; only x number of people inside at once. If I can avoid a day of maelstrom, I might drop by.

I have bought Coach factory bags and Coach bags from the department stores and I find that the quality is the same. There is a section in the outlets that have the regular Coach bags but as mentioned above, you can ask the sales associate for the non-outlet bags and they will be able to show them to you. The stores are beautiful and the sales help is knowledgeable and helpful. It is a great shopping experience.
