Happy Mother's Day ladies! At the end of May my husband and I will be spending 8 days in Paris/Rome for our 30th wedding anniversary. This has been "the dream" trip for as long as I can remember. I'm still pinching myself with excitement.

Now the problem. Everything I planned to take just doesn't seem to work. I'm a color gal. Black and white while I love, make me look like death. Black seems to be the color there. I've gotten myself so worked up these last two weeks that now I'm crying at the drop of a hat. Ok I really have to slap myself over that one.

I just want to look appropriate, comfortable and pretty for my wonderful husband. I'm also trying to take just one suitcase. Any advice ladies?

Congratulations, Lily on your milestone anniversary! How about using navy as a base color instead of black? It coordinates with any color you want to put with it. My packing strategy is usually to stick to a base color and coordinate color. That way you can usually get by with only two pair of shoes. I know there are a few Lines Ladies that are frequent European travelers and will offer terrific suggestions. Don't stress over your traveling wardrobe and make your trip less enjoyable. Whatever you choose will look beautiful to your wonderful DH!

I've been to Paris many times and usually wear black cause that's what I wear at home. But the main thing is to be comfortable and have a wonderful time. You will be there at a lovely time of year and perhaps you could do black/white/khaki bottoms with colorful tops. Don't fret. if you feel good you will look good

Lily, you will have a wonderful time. Paris and Rome are beautiful. Be sure and check their weather before you go so you can see where the temperatures are trending.

The last time I was in Paris, like Drrags, I wore mostly black bottoms since I like black and it travels well which is important. I took light colorful washable tops. Believe me, if you are spending 8 days in two cities, you will be running a lot and will appreciate easy clothing. I have two go-to Linea blouses that can be worn dressed up or dressed down. The only problem is that when I look at our travel pics they are always there .

Have a great time...how special

Never been to either but I've read to dress conservatively if touring cathedrals and the like in Rome and to take a head covering or hat. There are so many tourists in Paris and Rome you can wear whatever you're comfy in and you'll fit it. Don't try to dress like a local. (At least that's what I found in London.) Congrats and have a wonderful time.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187791-c3628/Rome:Italy:What.To.Wear.html

Thanks ladies for the suggestions. The black, khaki, navy bottoms sound great. Was thinking of going in that direction.

I have a lovely Linea dress (A222259) in navy that I'll be wearing for dinner at the Eiffel Tower followed by a night cruise around the city. I've received more compliments on that dress than I can count.

LexPex you mentioned two go to pcs that you take. What are they? I'm definitely taking the crinkle cut georgette tops in chili pepper, white and espresso. I love, love, love them lol.

Frannie thanks for the tips. I was planning a conservative but cute wardrobe since we'll be touring everything tourists do lol. We're doing the Louvre, Versailles, The Coliseum, and the Vatican among others.

I'm planning on wearing one of my Linea animal print short sleeve dresses from last season to the Vatican. I have terrific accessories to go with all three. I really want to dress up for the Vatican tourist or not. I never in my wildest dreams figured I'd ever make it there. I tear up every time I think of it. That will indeed be a highlight of my life sharing it with DH.

Thanks for the line!!!

I want to add to be especially careful with money/passports in and around the tourist attractions. Pickpockets hang around cathedrals and steal. I would get a pouch that can be worn under clothing.

Wear comfy shoes due to the old cobblestone streets and old pavement.

I was walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago and, just from walking behind this woman, I knew she was a tourist by what she was wearing. Just the cut and styling - from her top to her shoes - were different than what you can find at your local Macy's or Kohls, for example.

I think the worry is from the stereotype of the rude American in white sneakers, jeans and t-shirts. Just the fact that this is posted in the Linea forum tells me that the OP is probably not going to be dressing sloppily and will probably put together lovely outfits that she will be comfortable in and look fantastic. There are a few rules when going into churches - no bare shoulders and cover your knees - but otherwise just follow the simple rules the other ladies posted and don't worry so much about it.

However you need to be covered so no very low cut tops or shorts. Even casual clothing like jeans and a nice top are fine. I've been in dozens of cathedrals/churches in Italy, Greece, Turkey, and most of the rest of Europe and Great Britain and I only had to cover my head once - in a Greek Orthodox Church near Athens and that was for a special service held to bless travelers of all religions. So scarves and hats are also generally not required. I know that some of my Catholic friends do wear a scarf in some cathedrals in Rome but it isn't required.

Lily, I would base what I'm taking on Whisper Knits. I would say the WK skirt in black and latte for a dark and light bottom. Rome can be hot and Paris can still be cool. Then add the tops in what every colors look good on you. You can do a dress look in Latte with a tank and cardigan which will be perfect for dinners in nice restaurants or mix up the geranium pink, lapis and turquoise in tanks or short sleeve sweaters and matching cardigans if you want more color. There is lots to choose from and it's all washable and easy to pack. I would bring two pair of pants and crops for sight seeing and whatever else you want to add in, but I think the Whisper Knits are a good way to start. Hope this is helpful and have a great trip. I'm jealous!

Hi Lily1 ... I have never been to Paris but have been to Rome/Italy many times. You no longer have to wear a hat or head covering to go into the Churches and Cathedrals ... but you do need to dress a bit conservatively. No bare shoulders or really short skirts or shorts. I think the suggestions to wear black, navy, khaki bottoms with more colorful tops are good. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes as you will probably be doing a lot of walking. Have a great time. And congratulations on your anniversary. Maria

Leave the rubber flip flops, tank tops, shorts, and backward baseball caps at home!

Both cities are very conducive to walking and particularly in Rome many, many streets are cobblestone, so get a comfortable pair of shoes - forget the 3" heels.

And don't forget: no need to take 62 outfits. You will NOT see the same people day-to-day so take a few coordinating outfits and plenty of underwear.
On Wednesday I'm heading off to my 21st trip to Paris, i would say that you should take basic garments that you should accessorize with scarves and jewelry. Do not take clunky white sneakers. Do not take shorts ir bright pastel tops. Keep it basic but accessorized, and do take shoes that can take cobblestones and lots of walking. Tailored jackets are a must, to put over jeans and other casual pants by day or for dinners out with skirts or dress slacks by night. Bon voyage!

To be honest, don't fall into the hype that Paris is so much more fashionable than the USA. They have the Fashionistas just like here and they have there everyday frumpy women also. Also they were color and not just black. Do you look like a tourist if you wear mom jeans or khaki pants, t shirt, sweatshirt and big white tennis shoes? Absolutely. Yet again the city is full of tourist which they should love for their economy so why that is such a bad thing I don't know. I wore, when I went in June, sundresses, sweaters or jean jacket over them and cute sandals, or cute shorts with cute tops with cute handbag and jewelry and cool sunglasses. I hardly packed anything. I just mixed and matched so the pictures didn't look like same outfit over and over.

On 5/11/2014 chi5925 said:
Leave the rubber flip flops, tank tops, shorts, and backward baseball caps at home!

Both cities are very conducive to walking and particularly in Rome many, many streets are cobblestone, so get a comfortable pair of shoes - forget the 3" heels.

And don't forget: no need to take 62 outfits. You will NOT see the same people day-to-day so take a few coordinating outfits and plenty of underwear. This will leave room in your bags for bringing home lots of goodies.

Have fun and congrats on your anniversary milestone.

I travel to Europe on business and each time I go there I find something new and interesting.

I wore shorts. The dressy kind not the short kind. The kind at upscale stores in nice quality fabric. They are just above the knee and you see Jennifer Anniston wear them. That is where I got the idea.
