Retirement Clothes! 😬

Please help me out here! Lol... kidding, kind of! I have TONS of clothes that I will not need anymore... after I retire from the city. I've got many sisters ... but most that have retired before me and do not need my clothes. Tons of nieces that do not need my clothes. Maybe just donate to a local company, which I most likely will do.

I have bought so much from the Q over the years that I could probably buy a house! 😬 What have I done?! 🤪 QVC has served me well! 🥰

Here i am at 0155, cant sleep, mentally going through my closet, deciding what to donate to the thrift store later today. And I get up and come upon your post. My life as a retiree consists of medical and dental appts, church, occasionally eating out. All very casual. I have waaaayy more clothes than I can possibly wear. Many from qvc. Out they go!

My mother expected me to wear her old clothes. Trouble was...she was 6 sizes larger.

@JFD12 ............contact a local women's shelter a lot of times they need clothes. Check with local homeless shelters.

Sad to say but most donated clothes end up in landfills.

When I retired, my sister got my work clothes. The ones she wanted. Now, there's favorite comfortable clothes I wear. Did get some new blouses awhile back.

I think a person always has more clothes than they need. I work in an office that is casual dress. Jeans. Very casual. My second job is more dress up. Nice slacks, tops, jackets and that sort of thing but not over the top either. I only work when they need me. This month 6 times. This is my retirement job that started before I retired. Funny story.

I go though my closet all the time and donate on a regular basis. Some items I don't wear as much as I use to but still hang on to them. Some I move out and some go eventually when I feel like ok long enough. Clothes are expensive so nice to have the variety I do have.

In the summer I switch from jeans to more casual pants and that way I use more of what I do have.

When I buy clothes now I say to myself will you wear this when retired or will you use for your retirement job. No purchasing like I use to. I bought a couple Kim's pants for summer and that is it. The length works well for me.

I hardly watch the Q any more and that helped me cutting back on purchases. I was a big easy pay person but no more. All paid and going to keep it that way.

I donated all my corporate clothes to women's shelters after I retired. Since then, I've donated even more to them. These women have nothing and I'm thrilled if my clothes help even 1 woman get back on her feet.

We've been cleaning out our closets for about the past 6 months. As I sit here, my back's sore from helping DH clear out his closet. We donated his suits and dress shirts to the Salvation Army about 6 months ago. Yesterday we culled out 7 trash bags of extra casual clothing and shoes. How he thought he'd need 10 white polo shirts, 7 red ones and multiples of other colors is beyond me! 🤔

Of course, I have no room to talk. After being retired 15 years, I finally donated my business suits and other attire last Fall. I kept 1 or 2 just in case, but had to admit there was no point in hanging onto items I'd never need again when someone else might benefit from them. While most of my clothes were from Talbots, a good number were from QVC.

Pick a couple of outfits that you may use in retirement, then rip that bandage off and donate the rest. Good quality clothing is hard to come by and it's beyond the means of a lot of women who need it. Plus, think of all the space you'll gain in your closets!

@JFD12 You may also look into Long term care facilities or assisted living. Many time the residents may need a nice outfit for an outing. I was asked to donate a suit for a lady that had attend a funeral. I was told she was so ticked because she felt so pretty. I also look for local organizations that are looking for donations. I have several bags of things for a local organization for ladies that are going back to joining the workforce. I hope that helps!

I second the women's shelter. We have a local store that benefits the local shelter. I believe the women in the shelter get first pick and then the very high quality items go to the store to sell. The store has men's, women's, children's clothing as well as games, toys, kitchenware and furniture.

What is unacceptable for resale is recycled further.

I do have a funny donation story. A neighbor of mine was having a clothing drive for her church. I had this super cute sweater that looked like a giraffe's print. I loved it. However, not a good look on me. So, in the donation bag it went. Well, on of the ladies wore it and sent her a pix to send to me. She looked amazing!! I thought if I looked like that in it I would have kept it. It had a matching scarf that I found and sent to her! We laugh about that to this day. I have since given my neighbor more donations! I still adore a cute Giraffe at the zoo, not a print on me!

Around here most of the donation places are overloaded with clothes. One place near me had to close their business b/c people were using them as a dumping ground for their clothing. Consignment stores are very picky with what they will accept and if the garments aren't 'in season' forget it, you're out the door.

Folks with interview and work appropriate clothing, men's and women's, don't forget local colleges may want to offer graduating seniors workplace attire.

Deans of students or career office may be a starting point to check if there's a need.

With student debt a big issue, any help would be appreciated. Too many folks do not know that colleges have students with all types of insecurity: food, sanitary needs, etc.

If you check on Amzn, you may find your local or distant college has a dedicated wish list of needs for their students. Just check off what you wish to have delivered and your account is debited...can be anonymously given.

The wish list will show # / item needed.

Help here can help a student concentrate on their studies and not worry about starving and staying clean.

When I began working from home I had little need for a lot of my clothing, so out it went. Some to a charity and most to our local YWCA. The have a program for dressing for those entering business that are in need of business attire. If the clothing is not used they move it on to another group-often a thrift store that sells it and gives them the proceeds.. They made me laugh because they had only 2 pairs of my slacks left to donate to a thrift store. Not sure what that says to me... if it is good or bad! LOL!

This is also true with the donation places by me. The styles have changed and even good-quality suits for women aren't a thing anymore especially for younger women

@JFD12 Many people retiring from the business world have nice wardrobes they'll probably never wear again. Lots of women donate them to organizations supporting disadvantaged women just entering business who can't afford nice clothing.

I frequently see such organizations mentioned on the NextDoor app. You might inquire there for your area.
