Question about sizing

I am still oxox — Sat, 29 Mar 2025 19:52:03 GMT

I belong to a "petite/curvy group" on FB. I am 5 feet tall between 125-130 and I wear a size 12/Medium. How is it that women my height but 40 lbs heavier able to wear the same size, I find this very confusing. Over the past years I was 80 pounds heavier and my size went down as I lost weight. I hope I am making sense. Thank you all.

I think it will depend on the garment and if you're talking about "standard" sizing or QVC's vanity sizing.

Manufacturers' sizing can be a little irregular.

Also, some women are apple shape or pear shape ... so that factors in, also.

@Tinkrbl44 I rarely buy clothes from QVC I am talking about Amazon, and stores like Loft Actually I should not mention Amazon because their sized vary greatly by brand

Thinking back, sizing has always required a trial and error approach.

You can go to a B&M store and take 5 pair of size 12 black slacks into the fitting room to try on .... and they won't all fit the same.

I think I know what the OP is saying.

Perhaps some customers give spandex a greater stretch.

But, items fit differently and bodies are built differently.

Heavier bones and denser muscles. Also some people have more internal body fat. I'm not joking. A bariatrics physician told me. I have never been thin or even average weight. I have been morbidly obese and then obese. I'm now about 20 pounds overweight but happy with my body. I have never "looked" like my weight. Right now, I wear a size 12 on top, 14 on the bottom. My friend who wears 30 pounds less than me and is 2 inches taller; wears a size 12. Yes, you are making perfect sense. There are a lot of differences in individual bodies.

I mentioned this one day this week about somebody on QVC said they weighed 140 pounds, was 5-3 and wore a size small. I wear a large and am the same height and weight. How can that be? For one thing, my chest is bigger around because of asthma. I have had difficulty breathing all my life and my chest has expanded due to same. That makes my bust measurement larger. I have had mastectomy so some of that fat went to my belly/waist and makes that area larger. My legs are like birds and I have no butt. My shoulders look like a linebacker.

I think QVC sizing is a littler larger than your average department store. I've been having problems with some clothing items I've bought lately. I buy my usual size, (hasn't changed) and it's too big on me. I hate returning stuff but I have no other option.

Muscle is denser and heavier. I weighed more years ago when I did weights and worked out but my waist and hips were smaller. Oh what I would give for a flat tummy again.

Um ... I think it is more likely 10 or 15 pounds difference between sizes.

Otherwise, if a person is a size 8 at 110 pounds, someone weighing 130 would be a size 16.

Of course what also factors in is the distribution of any person's weight, and whether the garment fitted or relaxed fit.

Many considerations.

Lots of reasons...

Depends a lot on how your weight is distributed and your body shape. There isn't much uniformity in sizing either. You might wear one size in one brand and another size in a different brand. Some people prefer fitted clothing and others prefer loose clothing. Spandex and other stretchy fabrics allow people to fit into smaller sizes.

I don't think how you look correlates specifically to your clothing size. Most people think I wear a smaller size. They are shocked to learn I wear size 10 on the bottom, but I size up to fit my larger hips & thighs. I can wear an 8 sometimes, and even squeeze into some 6's if there's give to the fabric, but I don't like wearing tight pants.

It depends on where one carries the weight, the style of the garment, the material, the manufacturer sizing, and how the person likes to wear the garment. Some people have thick or narrow arms, bust, waist, hips, etc.. I wear a wide variety of sizes, depending on the garment and how I want it to look. I don't wear everything because everything does not "fit" me even if I can put it on. I don't care what size garments are, just the fit and look. For example, I notice most qvc models are heavier/ wider on the top/shoulders with smaller hips and rear, at whatever size they are. I don't like tight tops. I size up for knit tops, down for woven tops. Or maybe I won't wear either if I don't like the look.
