Question on Numeric Sizing on Pants

I will admit that I'm way too old to ask such a stupid question, but I've gotten around this issue for a long time by buying small/medium/large pants with lots of stretch because I'm confused by numeric sizing.

I am an apple shape, so when I look at the sizing charts I never find a size that matches both my hips AND waist measurement.

So what to do, order according to my waist measurement or my hip measurement? Or just forget it and stick with small/medium/large???

I've always read you buy according to your largest measurement, so for you, that would be your waist.

I would try a few brands on at a store to see what works best.

Puzzled here too...just ordered 2 pants from 2 Q vendors MEDIUM in both.............

Pant tags read 8 - 10 and the other 10 - 12

8 is too small & 12 too large (laugh at Breeze bras SML)

I still can't figure out why should we measure the smallest part of our waists when most waistbands end up lower, across our tummies.

Shouldn't we be measuring across the top of our tummies, instead of higher up where our waistlines are smaller?

It's a mystery (to me).

I just 'guess' the size, depending on the models wearing the items.

If the fit is 'too tight' on the models who resemble my figure, then I just size up.

No matter if numerical or alphabet sizes.

Well, that's about it for today.

@Suzeecat. I have the same problem, waist disproportionate to hip size. I buy by my hip measurement and use one of the elastic "invisible" belts I get on

Amazon. I don't have to unfasten the belt or unzip pants to take them on and and off.

I ignore the sizing charts and go by the garment measurements. That's really the only way you'll know if the garment is going to fit.

I have the opposite problem as the OP. I'm pear shaped and I have to go by the hip/thigh measurement but the waist is always too big. Pants can be really hard to fit unless you are blessed with a proportionate straight figure, like all the models.

I have given up on buying pants ONLINE...

Even in stores, I can wear 3 different sizes, depending on the brand.

I take a tape measure with me...find an empty counter, lay them out and MEASURE THEM in person.

OH YEAH...I wear "short" NOT petite...which adds to the challenge.

I wish they would all go back in time and size pants by "waist and length".

Edited to add: There is ANOTHER problem..."some" sizes are for the "stretched out" measurement, not what actually fits COMFORTABLY around your waist.
