Closet Edit Time

Time for my seasonal closet edit. I do this twice a year. Once near the end of Summer & beginning of Autumn and again near the end of Winter with Spring approaching. There's still plenty of summer left, so I'm a bit early this year on my purge, but I'm in the mood to do it, so now is the time.

Some things I can purge quickly without trying them on; others I try on and think about. When in doubt I ask myself, "Would I buy this today?" and "Am I looking forward to wearing this in the future?" Both answers remove any doubts.

I went through all my Spring/Summer items first. Getting rid of 2 tops, a dress, and one cardigan that are old looking, rarely worn, or just don't like anymore. Another dress was way too tight so out it goes. I have a half zip top, but I don't like the feel of the metal zipper against my skin. Wore it once with a tank under it, but since it's a summer piece that was too warm for me, so letting it go too. I need to remember, "No more zipper tops."

Next, I looked at my Fall/Winter items. Getting rid of 2 blouses I never wore and 2 dresses I don't want anymore. Said goodbye to a pullover sweater that I only wore a few times.

Decided to let go of a favorite top I've worn numerous times over the years, but I'm just tired of it. When I put it on my feeling was "meh". Definitely got my money's worth out of that top.

A dozen items total. That's not bad. I guess I'm doing a decent job with my purchases, but it's not good that 2 of the items were never worn and a few others were worn only once or twice. Need to continue working on making smarter purchases.

Anyone else editing their closet or planning a purge as seasons change?

ETA:

Just to clarify I'm not swapping out clothes for the change in seasons. Way too early for that. My clothes for all 4 seasons are stored in the same closet and dressers anyway so there's no need. What I am doing is going through my closet and dressers deciding what stays and what goes for the future.

@wilma Once a year, I donate or trash all clothing items I have not worn in over a year & don't look back.

I've always thrown away my tennis ankle socks by the end of September because I buy new ones the same day I trash the old.

2024 I have NOTING to donate. Just my socks to trash.

I think the "one year" rule is a good one to follow. If I haven't worn something in a year, I doubt I will ever wear it.

Thanks for the reminder about throwing out old socks. I need to go through that drawer.

I am OCD and switch out my wardrobe with each season, and will begin switching out my summer wardrobe the first week of September as we transition into fall.😊

Congratulations on your purge thus far! I know how cumbersome it can sometimes be.😊

It's still waaay too hot and humid where I live to even think about my "Summer Purge and Swap Out""

I wear lightweight, sleeveless and short sleeve clothing until around Halloween, so my "Seasonal Swap Out" will occur around the first week in November.

I'm not there yet but you have to do it when you have the urge & energy to get that task done!

For the last several years when I've been cleaning out my closet, if an item is in excellent shape I have been bringing my things to a local consignment shop.

I only get a bit of what I spent on the item but I have often gotten over $100.00 after having it sit there for three months. After that time period I told the shop to just donate what they don't sell.

I feel like it's a small win for me and she usually has quite a few items that have been left over & donated.

I've sold some things over the years to consignments stores too. Mine seem to be turning down more items lately. Whether donated or consigned, I hope some of my items are helping someone. I've also bought things for myself at consignment stores. I've found a few really nice pieces at my local stores.

I don't go by the *toss/donate after one year rule* because I do wear my things again. I'm just not repeating the same summer to summer outfits or winter to winter outfits. It switches things up. And I keep summer clothes downstairs and winter clothes upstairs. So nothing really gets *transferred*. We just have to walk a little farther.

It's still a little early for me to think about switching over to fall/winter items but I did notice a couple of things in my closet the other day that I've not worn in a few years so I'll be doing a pre-edit soon to go through and pull out those items.

I don't swap out my clothes. I wear shorts and short sleeves till October then long pants and long sleeves until March. Everything is in one closet. We don't have season in Arizona. Only hot, miserably hot and comfortable.

Hopefully, I'll be clearing out some things from my closet in late September or early October. It stays warm here awhile too.

I hope to have enough space in one of our buildings to store some clothes that's just one size too large. I can't get rid of because it's most of what I own. I've lost weight, but will probably put some back on once my dental work is done. However, I'm only leaning what I can currently wear in my closet when I do clear it out.

Lots of things I need to donate too though.😃❤️

I am a bit behind on this task....should have done it in March/April, but we were busy with other things.

I need to purge a lot of my white tees and tanks that have seen better days. I need to give away a few of the summer sweaters that I just don't wear anymore. Part of it is due to losing weight, but also some of these are in the "what was I thinking" category.

I like the idea of going thru my sock AND underwear drawer and tossing the old, I wouldn't want to be seen in the ER wearing these.

Mid September I will do a big closet purge. I don't need much, but I do need to quit hanging on to my favorite LDO items that are 2 sizes too big, etc., etc. /

A sister-in-law who has a lot more money and buys nothing but high-end designer clothes wears last year's clothes for everyday this year and buys new clothes for this year. I wish I could do that but my budget does not allow that. She says she never keeps anything more than 2 years. She also has a difficult foot to fit so her shoes are very hard to find and she has to go to Saks, Neiman_Marcus, etc., for that. I don't know if she really does or that is what she tells husband so she gets great shoes. One day I will tell you about her tennis bracelet. It's not an ordinary tennis bracelet.

I wear plain classic clothes. I could never ever get rid of things because they are a year old. Age doesn't influence what I keep or toss. If I like it, might wear it, I keep it.

I have clothes I actually wear out and hate to part with. Some no longer fit, some I don't like. But age doesn't matter to me.

I never understood why people get rid of clothes they haven't worn for a year. Maybe they buy fast fashion throwaway clothes that just wear out or go out of style quickly. I (in most cases) buy mostly classic quality clothes that last and still look good for years that I still like and wear. I especially have leather and denim jackets and jeans, just to mention a few types of clothing, I have had for years that still look great.

Yes I do donate clothes that no longer fit or I just no longer wear, but rarely pieces that I haven't worn for just one year.

I understand what you're saying. Sounds like you do a great job buying only things you love, want to keep, and will wear.

Sometimes I buy an item that seemed like a good idea at the time, but I probably shouldn't have bought. So it sits in my closet and doesn't get worn. Those are the pieces I get rid of if I haven't worn them the past year. If I have no intention of wearing it, out it goes. I have a very small closet so I don't have room to keep things I'm not going to wear.
