on the gourmet holiday show i thought i heard Monifa says her husband is irish...did she mean it like everybody is irish on St. Paddy's Day or is he actually irish?

I think she meant it in the former sense. She posted a photo of the two of them on Valentine's Day and he appears to be African-American.

If you are born in America you are American no matter what your ethnic heritage is. It is possible his family settled in Ireland and if born there he is technically Irish no matter his ethnic heritage.

@ValuSkr. African American is a race, not a nationality. He could be a black Irishman. Maybe not but it's possible.

I know you probably didn't mean it to sound this way but it reminded me of Lady Susan Hussey who was a friend to Queen Elizabeth and member of the royal household. She kept asking Ms Fulani who was a Black Charity Boss where she was from when they were introduced. She said the UK and Lady Susan asked again, but where was SHE from? and "where were her people from?!" Ms Fulani said "MY people?"!

Lady Susan Hussey apologized and resigned her position as a member of the Royal household.

Ms Fulani said it was embarrassing and an incident she will never forget.

There are people of different colors-black, white and everything else who actually were born in Ireland too. People who identify as "Black Irish" have lived there since the 1800's.

It really shows how absolutely clueless some people at the palace obviously are or extremely ignorant which is a part of racism.

Prince William said: "Racism has no place in our society, these comments were unnaceptable. It is right that the individual has stepped down."

And many who might not mean to be but come across that way, living in a very narrow world.

@on the bay And the woman misseda chance to honestly bring up a subject and discusset it with the offending woman, and maybe make a friend. Change comes also from human to human sometimes if given a chance. It won't come otherwise.

Yes, that would certainly be the ideal. I remember this in the news when it happened. There is a video and more details now.

Basically Lady Susan could not accept or believe that Ms Fulani was born in the UK. Everytime she answered that she was, Lady Susan repeatedly asked her where She was from and where her people were from as if she could not possibly be a native UK citizen.

Apparently it was a very awkward exchange and very embarrassing.I don't think there was a chance in this meeting for them to have a further discussion to work towards understanding at that point.

Still I think it created some good in hopefully making people more sensitive and aware.

I don't think Lady Susan meant to be hurtful, but it was. She probably has lived in a life where she has only known white Royals

born in England. Since this doesn't represent the attitude of the Royal family, as stated by Prince William, she resigned.

Or maybe she was asked to.

@Sooner Amazing...You really think a middle aged woman doesn't know that there are Black people born in Britain?🙄She tried to insult this woman by questioning her heritage, most people of color recognize this as "how did YOU come to hold this position." If this woman were truly ignorant, I would hope she would take it upon herself to become more educated, it's no one else's job.

The color of someone's skin does NOT determine their nationality.

My example was that Lorraine Pascale was born in London and is 100% Brittish!

Period!

@Love to Run No, I am saying that sometimes the only to not escilate a bad situation is to make some effort to contact the person on a human level and once in awhile that person goes away having some human connection that is worth all the effort and control one can muster.

I was thinking if the offended person had said to herself that in this instance I am going to swallow my anger, talk to her in a calm way, and have a genuine open and honest discussion of where I come from, my story and my pride in it, maybe it will strike a little cord and maybe change the world just a little.

Haven't you ever met someone you had an opinion about, gotten to know them, and started to feel differently about them? Some times it takes one person. Sometimes you are surprised. And sometimes you do more in little steps. I am not obligated to like every body, but I feel obligated to give people a chance when I can. Because I can be wrong. And so can they. We're all just people when it comes down to it.

@Sooner I'm not sure why you think Ms. Fulani was anything other than calm and gracious. She certainly didn't do or say anything to "escalate" the situation. She repeatedly informed her that she was from Britain, and the woman refused to believe her, despite her big age and position as an aide to the "royals". It was not Ms. Fulani's job so soothe this woman's ego or help her save face. She gave her more than one chance to be a decent human being.

It just sounded strange to me to mention one person on tv who is black who was born in England. Should we mention one white person who was born in England?

I guess that is how it sounded though you didn't mean it that way I'm sure.

You might not know what I'm talking about and I guess I can't explain it well at all.

@Love to Run No no, not to sooth or save face. I'm just saying that sometimes in a bad situation like this, you can make a connection with someone else, that maybe in time makes a difference. I'm saying at some point it's small things that in the long run do make a big difference.

I have found in my long life that I can't change big things by myself, but I can change small ones, and that is sometimes "all I got" that is worth anything in this world. I feel sure that you understand what I am trying to say. . .

@Love to Run Let me add something: Where I came from I had a really long way to go out in the world. And I found that I might not change how someone sees me unless I let them see who I really am. All I could do was keep being the best me I could be. Sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn't, but it was all I had.
