SOME SURPRISING, BUT WELCOMED, FASHION TRENDS FOR 2024

Not sure what style this is, but it isn't mine.

For 2024, experts say you can expect to see a continuation of ‘90s-inspired wardrobes - jelly accessories and collegiate prep, as well as grandpa, jazz, and retro femininity.

Polished Preppy

The industry is now experiencing a direct pushback on ultra casual styles.

“Look for refined shapes and touches of prep and polish.” Voluminous suiting in statement colors, along with the return of the polo shirt, signify a desire for this classic, crisp aesthetic.”

This style was a surprise. Didn't think the fashion industry had it in them to actually project preppy for 2024. Too conservative for them.

I'm not into short skirts and small handbags, but, I'll take Ralph Lauren preppy over the many other trendy styles.

Quiet Luxury

Coinciding with the polished preppy aesthetic is quiet luxury, which is all about wearing pieces that look and feel super expensive but aren’t blazingly so. Think perfect tailoring and high-quality materials versus blingy branding. Also referred to as “old money style,” you can also dive into this 2024 fashion trend with accessories like bags, jewelry, and shoes.

Surprising the fashion industry would choose this style. Too traditional and conservative for them, but here it is.

Another favorite style....quality and excellent tailoring, but the outfit represented here is not my vision of old money fashion.

Grandpa Chic

It’s officially time to bid adieu to coastal grandma and instead usher in a new icon: eclectic grandpa. “Think retro streetwear, chic cardigans and customized clothing.” Search terms like “grandpa style” and “eclectic clothing style” surging +60% and +130% respectively.

I think this is Millennial dressing. Not for me.

Hyperfeminine

Hyperfeminine styles of 2024, ultra girly aesthetics - Barbie, ballet, and cottage vibes. Pink and lacy details are in, as are bows, pastels, and floral prints.

No way for me!!!!!!

Volume & Shapes

In place of the ultra tight skinny jean and cropped jacket, 2024 fashion is all about experimenting with volume, length, and shape. You can expect exaggerated lengths to show up on all types of apparel, with long dresses, oversized long-line jackets, and even drop-waist dresses becoming mainstream again.

“Wide leg denim has given way to more tailored bottoms, which come in flowing fabrics such as cupro, gabardine, even sateen for some shine,” English says. “Pair these back to a matching blazer for a head to toe ensemble.”

Like blazers, but not this outfit. UGH!

Jelly Fashion

Nods to ‘90s fashion continues its stronghold as we venture well into 2024, with jelly accessories enjoying a notable resurgence. “Gen Z and Millennials are driving this squishy aesthetic, and incorporating it into their style by searching for things like ‘jellyfish hat’ and ‘jellyfish haircut.” Also very in: jelly shoes.

I used to wear these shoes, comfy and cute.

Pops of Color

2024 updated basics in crisp neutrals like black, gray, camel, and white. These are accented by pops of color, the most popular being millennial pink (yes, it reigns), lavender purple, canary yellow, and pistachio green grounded by deep navy.

“Refresh your existing wardrobe by adding a pop color piece to your neutral look, or make a bold statement by going head to toe in one color.

Monochromatic, black, grey, navy blue -That has been me for many years, just started adding more burgundy and red to my wardrobe. Instead of cream pants, I added very light grey slacks this past fall, better for my winter coloring. Love that color.

Jazz Revival

Vintage jazz looks are gaining serious tracking. Think sparkly wide leg pants with a modern day crop top and oversize blazer, bell-sleeve sweaters, blinged out corsets, silky floor-length slip dresses, and unapologetic fringe. If you’d wear it to a jazz bar, it’s in.

Black, navy, and burgundy sequins OK...like jazz music, but don't think jazz dressing is for me.

Sustainability

As consumers become more familiar with the downsides of fast fashion, there’s a rising interest in pre-loved and thrifted items, as well as brands that champion sustainable materials and practices and transparency.

“Look for recycled materials made from ocean plastics, or regenerative materials such as bamboo, seaweed, or other natural fibers."

I have seen some offered by QVC.

“There is also a resurgence in wool, linen, hemp, and other plant and animal fibers that had been pushed to the side during the rise of polyester.”

Like an IDIOT I wore jelly shoes to a theme park back in the day...mid July no less! I would've paid everything I had on me for some comfy tennis shoes. NEVER will wear jelly shoes again lol. I do think this was in the mid 80s though

@Foxxee Thanks for the pictures. Now I know not to thrift much of what's in the house just because it's been here a long time! There's practically nothing in that whole collection I am likely to wear well. I imagine some will sell well in some climates to some age groups. A few of the looks are just really bad, imo.

I just can't get over the sleeves on that white sweater, at least I think it's the sleeves??

That would drive me insane as one of my pet peeves are sleeves being too long and getting in the way. Yikes!

Well, if this is the way 2024 "fashion" is going, count me out.

The second picture in particular is awful - little schoolgirl look. With a skirt that short, you'd better have really good legs to carry it off and that model doesn't. (The handbag doesn't help hide anything.)

And, if this is supposed to replace the ultra-casual trends, it doesn't. Oversized, sloppy dressing?

The oversized white sweater with sleeves down to her knees is just ridiculous.

The "fashion industry" making women look like fools again and probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Other than the Pop of Color and the Quiet Luxury (minus the midriff showing) there is nothing shown I would wear or like.

Wow..already the article has wide leg jeans out of date...they were here, what? 3 months?

The ideas shown are interesting...the electric green crewneck top appeals to me because I just cannot get enough of natural fibers, they are comfortable!

Who cares, in a few months the styles will be changing yet again, I like my own style -

Tie dye, slim leg jeans, floral print jeans, and only clothing that a) fits well and b) is comfortable!

@Desertdi I never see pleated pants on anyone but old men. My dad had a pair or two but you couldn't convince him that they didn't hide his stomach.
