Help with getting my white denim jacket white again…

I have a white denim jacket that I've hardly worn, but it has a yellowish tinge to it. Any suggestions to getting it white again without damaging the fabric? (98% cotton, 2% elastane)

Add one-cup of hydrogen peroxide to your washer during the wash cycle, let it soak in the washer for about 15 min and then continue to the rinse cycle.

Check the laundering tag to see if you can use chlorine bleach. If so, wash it with bleach, following the instructions on the bleach bottle. If the tag says not to use chlorine bleach, Clorox makes a non-chlorine bleach that I use to brighten colored clothes and to keep them from getting dingy. Hope this helps!

OxiClean with the yellow lid or the white lid. I like the yellow lid and have whitened many things with it. Works best in hot water. You can presoak the jacket if you like and then wash, or just follow the directions on the tub. There is no chlorine in it. The white lid version has brighteners which might not look so great, I've never tried it.

Hydrogen peroxide should also work. Another old fashioned remedy is juice from real lemons, mixed with water and then the garment is allowed to sit in bright sunlight. Don't get the lemon juice on any metal parts of the garment.

@Desertdi @I'm not familiar with this product! I would only have known to use OxyClean. Interesting! I'll look it up.

I used chlorine bleach on a pair of white denim jeans and it ruined them. Turned them more yellow, beyond repair.

I never put bleach in with my white jeans (denim). I have also had it turn things yellow. I use a product called OUT White Bright. I get it at Walmart. You don't want to breathe it when you put it in your washer.

I follow an interior designer, and she swears by using blue Dawn dish soap on your white towels and sheets. Her videos on this have gone viral several times.

Only two small squirts on a white washcloth. For top loaders, do it after the water has filled the tub.

No other soaps and never use bleach on your whites.

Think back on the history of the jacket. Ever sent to the dry cleaners? Washed in a different source of water? Could give you hints.

With that much cotton in the jacket, I would Clorox that puppy with a small amount of bleach. Don't overdo it or you will discolor the metal snaps or buttons on it

I use a scoop of 20 Mule Team Borax in all my laundry loads. Also use Mrs. Stewarts Blueing if needed

I would not bleach it. Bleach can turn spandex/elastane yellow. Did you already bleach it? That might be the culprit of why your white jacket is yellowish.

Definite not chlorine bleach! I use Oxyclean White Revive to brighten my whites. I get it from Amazon.

Clorine bleach cannot be used on any fabrics except 100% cotton. It will turn polyester, elastic, rubber and other synthetic fabrics yellow.

You can try to soak it in an Oxy cleaner or even electric dishwasher detergent, but depending on why it turned yellow, it may never get white again.

I once soaked a white top turned yellow in Oxy for over a week while I was on vacation. When I got back, my top was white. I was lucky, I was ready to throw it out.
