Did You Cut Them Off?

Back in the day, did you take a scissors to your blue jeans and make "cutoffs" out of them for summer?

I remember taking the most worn pairs of jeans each summer during high school and cutting them off somewhere above the knee. (My older brother cut his too.) Usually the bottom hem was worn from hitting the ground when I walked, & occasionally the knees got faded.

I didn't need lots of shorts for summer back then; I mostly wore a couple pairs of cutoffs. A few t-shirts, a couple halter tops, & few tops from Pier 1, along with thong sandals (now called flip-flops) and a pair of huarache sandals were my summer necessities then.

A simpler time.

Edited to add: and a bikini swimsuit!

@Desert Lily Absolutely. My bestie and I would put our jeans on and cut them off while wearing them. Talk about living dangerously. LOL One of us always got a nick from the scissors. It made sense to us at the time to do it that way.

You're right. It was simpler times. Some tanks, t-shirts, cut offs and water buffalo sandals and not a care in the world.

I only ever cut off one pair of jeans, as I was an equestrian, and believe me, you do NOT want to ride a horse in shorts, bareback or on a saddle! Mostly I wore those cut-offs under mini-dresses, since there was no such thing as a slip or half-slip short enough for those minis, and they wouldn't have hidden my undies anyway.

I did indeed! I can't remember ever buying denim cut offs. We just cut off our worn jeans. Summers were very casual and summers here are short. So no one spent a lot of money on summer clothing. I remember wearing those rubber thong sandals that cost $3. I didn't love my body when I was a teen, I wore my dad's old shirts or tees over my shorts. Makes me sad now. I was a size 10 or 12 then and I already thought I was fat. By the time I was in my early 20s, I'd given up wearing shorts.

Of Course!!! And I remember cutting off the left leg then the right....then adjusting the left....and then the right.... LOL!!!!

Actually I have a couple pairs of jeans that are too long now, I think I will take an inch or two off the bottom. I'll let you know if they end up as ankle pants or shorts!

Absolutely I did. I think just a year or two ago is when I finally got rid of the last few remaining pairs. They were my yard shorts during summer up until then. It's recycling old worn-out jeans, into shorts. I haven't worn them out in public for many years, but in my yard, you bet.

I probably only did that once or twice. I didn't have a whole lot of jeans to begin with so I rarely cut them off.

@CamilleP What????? I rode about every day and in summer in hot hot hot Oklahoma rode in shorts, bareback or saddle. Sometimes in my wheat jeans, but mostly in shorts! Only owned wheat colored jeans and never cut them off.

Saddle up and hop on! And if I was using Daddy's heavy roping saddle that was a big lift up onto Lady's back!

Oh yes, when i was maybe 14-15 i cut about an inch of fringe on my cut-offs.

i wore shorts with tall brown English riding boots - they were hand-me downs from a neighbor. i wore them 2 summers with shorts. i went riding - i rode Western - and also bareback.

at the beach i wore a big white T-shirt over my bathing suit. i was so self-conscious

the summer heat never bothered us much as kids...when we were younger we wore Danskin outfits! those were so hot! 100% poly and or nylon!

Yes when they got to short I would cut them off.

I had a pair of white jeans I really liked that I didn't want to cut them off. My mom bought some baby blue with white gingham fabric that she added material to the bottom of my white jeans. She also made a smock top with the same baby blue with white fabric. It had blue rick rack trim on the sleeves & pockets with a belt.

When I was 15 I went to work at Kens Pizza so I could buy my own clothes & shoes.

When my jeans got old and worn, or too short, I was allowed to cut them into shorts. All my friends did it too.

We definitely had fewer clothes as children and teenagers. Somehow we managed, and I don't really remember complaining about it. I also don't remember noticing that people were repeating items & outfits even though I'm sure we had to with fewer pieces.

Doubt I could live with such a small wardrobe today, although I'd like to try it. It would be much simpler & easier to get dressed with fewer pieces in my closet.

Quite a few pair I took under the scissors. Pockets had to be left hanging out a bit for the full '70's look.

to add fabric to the hem of the jeans and a matching top

too .How cute!

In the early 70's I made light blue and white,

gingham check, matching sundresses for my three

little girls. They were 4, 5, & 6 years old at the time.

I think that was the same summer I made a mint

green gingham check bikini, trimmed with white

eyelit lace and a matching mini dress cover up.

I'm still using gingham check, with red and white

curtains in my kitchen.

I don't remember ever wearing cut off jeans. But I

do remember embroidering them with flowers and

pretty edge designs on the pockets.
