Has anyone used Rit Dye? I have found a cute dress but it is Pepto pink and I would like to dye it black. Fabric is 54% cotton 46%rayon.

Please try and dye a small swatch first.

I suspect the cotton will be no trouble but rayon might accept color at a different rate than cotton.

In the Rit Dye process, you have to use very hot water. Thus might not bode well for the Rayon as it often shrinks with heat. What do the washing instructions say?

I would not try dying unless I was willing to pitch the dress with no tears. It's o iffy.

@Kachina624 Dress label says it is machine washable. The dress came in black or pink but black is sold out hence my thought to buy pink and dye it black.

The thread may not dye black. At least that's been my experience with using Rit dye, thread did not take the color. Also if there is a zipper, it may not take the color either.

@Hilery Just becuz it says machine wash,doesn't mean hot water.

I used to dye alot when I had my old top loader washing machine. You could just full the machine with hot water, add the die and let it agitate put the item let it finish the cycle and done. It was kinda fun.

The company does recommend that after using their dye products on blended with rayon and other natural fibers, you should use their Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative. This product is used after dyeing and before washing. Its purpose is to protect from color bleed as well as give you a great color to look at.

The instructions to use that dye additive are on the box so you should not have any trouble preserving your hard work and be proud to wear the end result.

DH likes to use Rit dye with his denim. I have had it dye my washing machine for a very long time until it wore away, but never colored my clothes.

Also, after time, Rit dye washes out causing the need to redye.

Just buy a black dress that you like. Forget the dying. It's too much hassle, it usually never turns out the way you want plus it fades too fast.
