I bought a pair of jeans from Old Navy and they are dark but they aren't super dark. I use white vinegar all the time in my washer but that didn't do anything to prevent the jeans from bleeding.

I had washed them at least 3 times and made the mistake of tossing some bras in a lingerie bag in with them. I figured I was safe since they had been washed several times.

Every one of my new bras was tinged blue around the edges.

I use the cold water and vinegar too. I also add older jeans to the dark water to freshen their color a little. Can't hurt!

Tried vinegar on a pair I recently bought; my new beige leather seat in my new car has the blue dye all over it....cost me $70 to get it cleaned. They must be doing/using something different in the dark denim dye now. And these jeans were expensive! Am returning them to Nordstrom

I used a product made by ... Shout, I think ... called Color Catchers. They're sheets a lot like dryer softener sheets, and they do just what the name says: when color bleeds from garments, the sheets absorb it. They won't stop your jeans from bleeding but it will prevent the rest of the laundry getting bled on.

They're about $8 for a box of ... maybe a dozen (?) ... and worth every cent.

I haven't had a problem lately, but I had a huge problem with their black jeans. Not only were my car seats, couches, and under garments stained from dye. But my hands and legs were always covered with black dye. it was awful. Now everytime I order black jeans or blue/black jeans I do the vinegar thing. It seemed to help. But this was after suffering through the dye problem for months. I only wear NYDJ, and buy a few pairs a year. I always buy black or dark blue, same style.

I used vinegar on items I tie-dyed and it helps a lot. I also recommend Shout Color Catches to throw in the wash with anything that might bleed. They're cloths with soda ash and the soda ash collects the extra dye like a sponge and it doesn't bleed onto other clothes. I swear by them.

If you want to make your own so you don't throw more disposables in the land fill, here's a blog post (not my own) with a DIY version.

I wanted to say, this usually happens with vat dyed jeans, not yarn/thread dyed jeans. When the threads are dyed first, then woven into fabric the dye is better.

Dark denim jeans can be a classic wardrobe staple; they are great jeans for the office and date night, too. But unfortunately, the indigo dye used in the denim making process is notorious for bleeding. It can be really frustrating to find that your very favorite new pair of jeans has stained your white furniture, light clothing and even your skin. Although indigo dye can usually be washed off, the bleeding can be annoying to deal with. This can happen even after several washes and with high-end designer denim, too. Luckily, there are a few ways you can help prevent your jeans from losing their dye. Try out the below methods to help keep your jeans from bleeding.

1. The first thing you will want to do when you bring your new pair of dark denim jeans home from the store is to wash them. Do not wear them or hang them in your closet; you'll want to start the treating process right away. You'll notice that many jeans will even have a disclaimer tag on them that indicate that the indigo dye process used to manufacture the jeans will bleed. This tag will also advise you to wash them immediately.

2. Wash your dark denim jeans inside out using cold water. Do not use hot water as this can make your jeans shrink; cold water is also much more gentle on dyes. Make sure to wash the jeans by themselves, without any other clothes with them. This will ensure any dye released in the wash cycle won't stain your other clothing.

3. Add a cup of white vinegar to your cold water rinse. The vinegar will help seal the dye within the fabric so that they won’t continue to bleed. At the very minimum, the added vinegar should at least lesson the amount in which the indigo dye bleeds and stains other fabrics. You can also try soaking your jeans in a mix of cold water and vinegar if you are hand washing your jeans. Hand washing is highly advisable if you are concerned about your jeans retaining their shape.

4. You may want to put your jeans through several cold wash cycles , and add 1T salt to final rinse, before you wear them for the first time. Remember to turn your jeans inside out each time and to wash them alone so that the dye does not transfer to your other clothing. To help retain the shape of your denim, do not put them in the dryer. Instead, hang your jeans out to air dry.

5. If your jeans are still bleeding a lot after trying these steps, you can try soaking your jeans in cold water and vinegar overnight. Fill up your bathtub with some cold water and add a cup of household white vinegar. In the morning, you can run your jeans through a plain cold water wash. When finished, hang to dry.
