It's just dawned on me that whenever I'm sitting at the table and reading the paper, I am generally eating. The problem is, I finish whatever meal I'm eating and then proceed to munch on something else while I continue to read. Usually it's granola or other dry cereal, but over the weekend I had some pretzel sticks. I try to avoid cookies and other sweets.

My neighbor and I are getting back into our walking routine (an hour 4 nights a week after work), so that will lessen my time at the table! I'm also planning to keep apples on hand to slice and eat if I can't break my bad habit!

What about you?

Since I changed the way I eat over two years ago, I plan/budget for some junk food every day. Some days it's pretzels, many days it's chips. A single serving is enough, unless ... I have had a sugary treat that day. I have noticed that after eating a cupcake or sugar cookie, for example, that I am fighting the munchies the rest of the day. My solution has been to save the sugary treat until late in the day. I am not blacklisting any food or food group - I believe anything and everything in moderation - and I am not willing to pretend that I will never again eat a cupcake.

Prior to my lifestyle change in February 2012, I also read at the table. I very rarely do now, because as you point out, it can lead to mindless nibbling.

Winter, and especially THIS winter, has been a real trigger for eating! Being home bound due to weather conditions leaves little to do but soothe our souls with food.

Mine is watching tv. And it has nothing to do with food commercials because I could be watching things I DVR'd and I fast forward through the commercials. Something about sitting there watching triggers me to want to eat.

I agree with Magic too that this winter has been horrible for it. Because it's been so god-awful cold and snowy, I've spent more time than usual sitting in my house. Usually I walk my dogs after work and that takes up a few hours. Not this winter.

Same here with cold weather & comfort foods. When it's cold, like today, I start wanting things that are not in the house. I've been thinking and thinking about See's dark chocolate covered almonds. Even looked it up online, saw free S&H over $65. and started to figure how many boxes I would have to buy to hit $65. Then, I told myself I was losing my mind and to get right!!!

I can't imagine how much I would eat if I ordered them in this state of mind. Come on, Spring 2014!

Unfortunately there are some good gluten free cookies, so I must watch myself.

One of my tactics is fill up on healthy food first, like a big salad, then if I do have a sweet it's not that much, and it doesn't affect me that much.

Lately I've been backsliding tho.

I do not eat in between meals. I keep myself busy when I am home. If I get a snack attack I have some fruit or some raw vegetables with low fat dip. I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyway.

I can literally eat just one potato chip ..... but I am a Cookie Monster! I can eat a whole plate of soft chewy cookies, so I have to be really careful.

Suggestion ..... find some sugarless hard candies ... or lollipops ...... to have while you're reading if you need "something" to eat. It helps a lot!
