Stylists? Credentials...

What do you think is needed to call yourself a “stylist”? They seem to be all over the internet and shopping channels. Guess you just need people to listen to you. Then there are the ones who dress famous people and they get noticed whether they are good or not.

@wakefield64 Call me skeptical. To me "stylists" are in the same category as "life coaches". You can call yourself one with no credentials needed.

"Good" is in the eye of the beholder. You don't get to dress famous people unless you have a sharp eye for whatever it is that captures the public at that time.

But to broadly answer your question, I think anyone can call themselves just about anything these days. I am so tired of the word influencer, for example. But there it is, and it seems here to stay. You can be whatever right out of the gate. But unless you can back it up with impressive credentials, it means little to me.

QVC has labeled Nancy Hornback a "Lifestyle Expert,"and she uses that title nearly every time she introduces herself in all her shows now. I don't even know what lifestyle expert means.

I guess the minute we open our closet and pair this with that and add these earrings, scarves and shoes etc. We're stylists too. If you say to me "Kbeans those shoes don't look right with that skirt, try these" and I listen to you you're an influencer 😝 We just ain't getting paid or notoriety or freebies!

As far as I'm concerned, you don't need anything besides opening a Youtube channel and calling yourself a stylist. There are enough gullible people who will follow you.

Apparently what you need to call yourself a celebrity stylist is good connections. I watched Rachel Zoe's show on bravo and was always amazed that what she did was basically ask designers for their samples and then present them to the celebrity to choose which one they wanted to wear?! Pretty sure anyone can do that!

I think that what Clinton and Stacy were doing and what not to wear looked a lot more like styling than what Rachel Zoe does/did

Seriously???? I've never heard them call her that. (Nancy Hornback a "Lifestyle Expert," I've heard her call herself a gem specialist but apparently she went to school for that and got her "degree." I don't care what they call themselves. I am my own stylist. Like Kim keeps saying her items make you look like a million bucks. That's not what I think.

@rms1954 Yes. Nancy mentions it in some of her [non-jewelry] shows. It also appears often in her social media accounts. It started sometime during the summer months.

A stylist is someone who can dress a person (or display a brand) in a variety of ways creating the best possible looks.

My background is in clothing, textiles, chemistry (dyes), and Interior Design. I am constantly looking up changes in current fashion and how it relates to past fashion.

I retired from teaching and went into styling through a store. I also work with complections.

To be fair not every profession requires a degree or certification which leaves the door open for many to challenge their veracity

Unfortunately I can't get a job at NASA cleaning bathrooms and hope to work my way up to astronaut... 😉

We're all stylists. We all dress ourselves and put together outfits every day.

A salesperson in a clothing store is no more a stylist than me. LOL
