I guess this is fashion or could be health? I look at it as fashion, too as it is an accessory for the face!

Any how --- when searching for a new pair of frames --- it's a big decision, right? So many choices! And you look and look and after awhile you can't figure out -- does this look good or not??? (scratching head)

When you are making your decision, are you more likely to go with a frame that suits your face even though it may not be the most attractive choice or the one you would prefer, OR do you just think --- these frames are so cute and are really hot or in style or whatever critera that is important to you?

I always used to be right on with what was in or not in regarding fashions, etc. But now that I am older and retired, these things aren't really that important to me. Although, don't get me wrong, I don't really want to wear things that make me look frumpy and aged! So, yeah, I do want to consider fashion somewhat when I am making a decison regarding frames as well.

Used to be when I'd go to the eye place, they'd say -- oh, you have to wear a tiny frame beause your face is so small. Now, it's like you see people very petite wearing these huge frames!

I guess like anything with fashion --- anything goes -- if you like it --- go for it!

I am in need of new specs, so I am just mulling all this over.

What are your thougts?

Much appreciative of your posts!

I have prescription glasses and sunglasses. I have a small face. Most big sunglasses look bad on me. They practically cover my face. Although I love the aviator look, I can't wear them. So when I got them through an ophthalmologist, I asked for something small and I got them.

Above all else the bridge and frame width are what gives them comfort. They can order different colors and sizes for you. When you first put them on you should go ahh, nice.

Then for me and my trifocals, the lens height was critical.

Be open to the new too.

This is one of life's hard ones.

I end up with a combination of what looks good on me, and what feels good. And, of course, what is available from my doctor. Like you, @AngelPuppy1 , at my age I'm much less concerned about what's popular at the moment.

I usually end up with wire titanium frames, sometimes the half-frame, because they're light and durable. I also prefer the adjustable nose pieces, so that limits my choices as well. There are other more popular styles I'd love to wear and have tried over the years, but these work best for me.

Years ago, when huge glasses were in style, I had one eye doctor tell me that they weren't good on my face because I couldn't look out of the correct part of the lens since they were so large. I happened to wear that style for years and was fine--until I needed to change styles. I had a heck of a time adjusting to a new and completely different size. Now, I try to stick to a similar size and shape of eyeglass when I get new ones.

Now that eyeglasses are so expensive, I need to be practical. I can't afford to change them every time styles change.

I kind of walk that "Goldilocks" road. Not too big, not too little but still stylish in some ways. Frames have to be a little "updated" for me, however, whether it be in the color or details of the frames.I don't mind going a little bigger but if I go too big they get makeup all over them so I don't go there.

Before I had cataract surgery a couple of years ago I wore rimless glasses. I never liked plastic frame because they are usually to big for my small face and my prescription was very difficult and heavy. (Think somewhere in the range of 20/700). The place I went to custom made the lenses to my face so they didn't look to bad but not very stylish when I look back. I also used to wear many years ago wire frames.

I've worn glasses 24/7 for over 70 years. I would guess that's over 60 new eyeglass frames. I buy what I think looks best on me at the time.

I generally have an idea of what kind of frames I want ... style and color ... before I even get to the optometrist.

In some years - when I got new frames, I also had them replace the lenses in my other frames. So, I currently have three pairs of glasses with my current prescription. Two different frame shapes, three different colors.

My advice - buy what YOU THINK looks best on you.

I can never see myself so rely on the Optician. Or take a friend along.Sunglasses can be alot more bold and sparkly I think. I am willing to try something different and they like that. I get a new pair annually. The local Lions Club takes old glasses so donate when I am ready.

I know what doesn't work for me like black frames as my coloring is too light, so harsh on medium skin. I love black on other people. I can't wear aviators either.Frames can be too wide for my Oval type face.

It has been said to go with your hair, skin and lip tones for color and don't pick a shape that is like your face shape, round on round for example. Avoid eye color. I have a new pair in blue which is too close to my eye color. Not a favorite. I didnt think I would like transition lenses but like them for summer in and out of the house or traveling so as not have to stop and pull out sunglasses. I wear regular glasses more in Winter.

I wear gas permeable contact lenses, and have for 40+ years. I do so because glasses cannot correct my vision very well. I do wear glasses around the house though. I only purchase frameless/rimless lenses now. I am very nearsighted and despite methods to reduce lens thickness, the lens will always pop out of any frames. Not worth the frustration. My last two pairs have been a rectangular shape which works well for me, and one I will stay with.

I just went for my eye exam on friday. I won't need new lenses this time, haven't in 3 years so I guess that's a good thing. I only wear them for reading so they are still like new. IMO, when choosing them I went for the color (dark pink) with a pretty little flower on each temple area. I get lots of compliments if I am wearing in a restaurant or something. They are on the smaller side, I feel large glasses makes my nose look big!?

I generally do the same with sunglasses, though I think I look better in some styles rather than others. Bottom line, go with what you like.

My strong prescription doesn’t allow me to wear larger frames so I stick to smaller ones. Things I’ve learned that work for me: (1) frames with an uplift on the outer corner, like cat eye frames, compliment my face; (2) blue frames are my best color; and (3) lightweight titanium frames. I try to find those aspects when looking for glasses. I also depend heavily on the optician. She has a good eye and is very good at helping me choose frames.

ETA - I've been wearing Lindberg frames for years.

1. Face shape

2. Comfort

I've found that Versace frames fit as if they were custom made for my face. I'm way overdue for a new pair (remind me to call my optometrist tomorrow), but the pair I've had for the past two years is this one:

Why this pair?

I have a soft spot for the cat-eye frame, but I also like that it's slightly rectangular.

And what I really like about it is that there is no obvious metal on the frame. I don't like committing to one particular metal frame when I wear both gold and silver jewelry.

I always have to worry about what frames are currently available. I need a new pair but will I find one I like as much?

My ophthalmologist does not sell glasses. I use a local optician who carries an interesting selection of frames. I go in knowing which frame(s) I already have that I'm okay with re-using. Last time I had a new script, I was able to re-use all 3; that made the cost of 3 sets of new lens almost bearable.

Perfect timing for this thread as I have an eye appointment next week and need new frames. I just try them on until I find one that is comfortable and I like the look. Over the years I have had all different sizes and shapes. Because they are so expensive I avoid color and stay with more neutral frames. Hope I find what I like.

I have metal allergies so the frame must not have metal touching my face, so I always start w/ those frames first. And because I am a bit if cheapskate, I shop for my glasses at COSTCO. They put the frame width on glasses and I narrow down from that selection. Finally, I start trying on to see what looks good on my face. So with reading and computer glasses, functionality comes first, then on what looks good.

For prescription sunglasses, I tend to go a bit more trendy and will pay more, as I don't replace every year or two like I do with my reading and computer glasses.
