Halston Article In People Magazine

In the new issue with Alex Trebek on the cover. Article is on page 76.

It mentions the new Halston documentary which is playing in select theaters, I'm sure it will be available soon for home viewing.

The article talks about how he was a trailblazer for mass market brands by high end designers. In 1982 he became the first designer to do that by designing a line for JC Penney. Bergdorf Goodman and other prestigious stores dropped his luxury line, claiming that the JC Penney collection diminished the elegance of his brand.

Sadly after that happened he fell into a downward spiral and became addicted to cocaine. Even using it openly at work. He began turning in designs later and later to JC Penney which led to an explosive showdown with the executives who owned his company. They kicked him out and the brand continued without his input.

He was only 57 when he died of AIDS in 1990.

The Halstonettes-his go to group of models. Cameron Silver always uses that term to describe the QVC H by Halston customers.

I would definitely watch a movie/program on this if it were to be shown on TV. I'm fascinated by some of these famous clothing designers and enjoy learning about their history and how they came up with their ideas. Not just Halston, but Chanel (read her bio), Lagerfeld, Galiano, Dior, McQueen, etc...

Interesting that he had his go-to group of models. Much like Versace w/his supermodels - Cindy, Christy, Linda, Claudia, etc...

Must be an interesting world they live in. I will try and pick up a copy of this magazine.

I subscribed to W back in 1980/81 and i remember the editor (John Fairchild) used to skewer Halston and Bill Blass for "selling out".

I was an aspiring fashion illustrator so W and WWD were key for inspiration.

He was so talented....sad the way it turned out for him. He probably lived more in his shortened life than most people live long life.

He was definitely ahead of his time looking to market high-fashion in a more affordable way to the rest of the public. I would say he was a trailblazer!

In the 1960s, a friend who became a psychiatrist (who was also gay) befriended many famous people who were his clientele/patients. Not wanting to wear their clothing more than once in public, he asked that some who wanted to give their clothes away, give him the clothes. I was the benefactor of several Halston dresses which I, otherwise, would not have been able to afford. I loved them but moreover loved the childhood friend and his generosity and friendship until the end, when he, too, died of AIDS. He has been missed for his kindness and loyalty through the years. It was in the mid to late 1980s that he died.

Great story...do you still have those original Halston dresses? They are HIGHLY collectable, especially with original buttons, inside label, etc. He is one of the most revered American designers ever, especially globally.

Back in the day, Halston's fragrance was quite lovely. His clothes were expensive when he first appeared and his name was everywhere. AIDS is such an awful disease and took so many lives, including a few of my friends. May they all rest in peace. His name will live on forever...

Omg...I wore that cologne for YEARS and forgot all about it. As soon as you all mentioned the whiskey colored perfume with the ivory top, it flashed in my memory.
